Re: eBAy: Captured german planes
I suppose this shouldn’t piss me off any more, but it still does. This poorly-reproduced copy, like numerous others of the defining photos taken at Fl.Horst Neubiberg, was taken by Merle C. Olmsted, and as usual, he is not credited. In fact, that’s Merle in the photo.
Beyond that, there is an interesting back-story to this photo. Several times, Merle told me that he was drawn to pose with this particular aircraft because, unlike most of the other II./JG 52 Bf 109’s that featured yellow rudders and cowl bands, this aircraft (WNF-built Bf 109 G-10/U4, WNr. 61xxxx, 1+ - black o/l white, from 5./II/JG 52) featured a “dull faded red cowling.” I was so intrigued by his assertion that I asked him about it on several occasions just to confirm it. Should this be true, it would certainly make for a striking Messerschmitt indeed. Respectfully, Steve Sheflin |
Re: eBAy: Captured german planes
I'm glad you posted your comment Steve. For all of its benefits, the internet has its bad side. Had this photo been reproduced in a book or magazine without proper attribution, someone would have noticed and been able to point this out to a real person. Now, anonymous persons located in various places can post and offer for sale photos that the average buyer would think are authentic. Complaints to eBay could result in a particular photo's removal and have some affect on the seller's standing. Or not. If someone thinks it's real and buys it, that seller could continue to offer more of the same. I think some mechanism for reporting or keeping track of sellers who offer repros should be put in place.
Best, Ed |

Re: eBAy: Captured german planes
I thought that was Merle in the photo. It's only the right thing to do to give him credit even if he is gone. He left so many, to us now, wonders.

Post 3955 = D.520
Boujour à tous,
The post 3955 shows a photo a wrecked Dewoitine 520 in german markings (left behind at Reims). Regards. RB |

Here are amateur attempts at cleaning up the He 111 and Ju 88 photos.
About the only additional details I can make out are: He 111: in the background what looks like either a support for a perimeter fence, or maybe a power or phone line. Ju 88: meander camouflage on the cockpit wall and a fuselage code that I read as +TS (see inset). |
Re: eBAy: Captured german planes
Greetings,
Post #3272 – I believe that this is Ernst-Heinkel-built He 111 H-14 (WNr. either 7910 or 7920), St.Kz. either GB+GF or GB+GP, abandoned destroyed at Fl.Horst Halle-Nietleben (coordinates 51.486111 11.941667). Respectfully, Steve Sheflin |

Re: eBAy: Captured german planes
I've seen the Me 262 photo many times and it's a shame that the WN will probably never be readable. I do like the RLM 81-82 camo.

I just chanced here on a photo of this machine with the first three digits clearly legible as W.Nr. 500xxx: https://collections.ushmm.org/search...%2C2341%2C1712 Only three more digits to make out... Cheers Marc |

Re: eBAy: Captured german planes
Good morning,
http://forum.12oclockhigh.net/album....&pictureid=712 I think Steve may be right. I think I see a final "4" in this photograph. Jim |

I'm not sure that I understand? Where is there a "4" in the link you provided? (Both engine inlet cowlings damaged on lower side. Nose gear collapse?) https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...23f989a6_o.jpg https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...305a0553_o.jpg I'm also confused with if you think the above photos are the same aircraft as this one? (Hard to tell if engine inlet cowling is damaged. The brush/grass/weeds look different compared to the above.) https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...67f1c79c_o.jpg https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...59a95b39_o.jpg |
Re: eBAy: Captured german planes
Hi Revi,
http://forum.12oclockhigh.net/album....&pictureid=713 Perhaps this photo gives a better perspective of the damaged cowlings and flattened nosecone. While I also have the photo you show, I think mine has better resolution and I think I see a "4" at the Sergeant's knee level. Jim PS I'm having trouble seeing the picture I just posted. My fault, working now. |
Re: eBAy: Captured german planes
Nice find, yes, I agree :) for Fw190, Ju87 and 219 as for the 262s, sorry, nothing new for me ;)
I agree with Steve about the last digit, can be 500534 though. Cheers, Franck. |
Re: eBAy: Captured german planes
You may be correct Steve about 500524.
