Re: Photos Royal Aircraft Factory Aircraft

Clint not to be too finicky but technically on Jan.2 it would be No.1 (Aux) School of Aerial Gunnery re-designated from the School of Aerial Gunnery (Dymchurch) the previous day; both this and Hythe were on the Kent coast ( appropriate that "Hythe" in Old English means "landing place").
The US Signal Corps / USAS also had tugs in WW1, mostly JN-4HGs "G" for gunnery as distinct from other trainers; stations included Arcadia FL and Fort Worth TX and the Navy had a few JN-6HGs same use.

Hello,

Currently on ebay are a small number of photos of Royal Aircraft Factory B.E.2e (well they may or may not all be B.E.2e) including A1323 of 14 Squadron.

Re: Photos Royal Aircraft Factory Aircraft

Hi Clint. these 2 serials seem to have travelled; same block (C3381--C3480) and same contracts but cancelled from Sopwith Strutter to HP.0/400 finally to R.E.8, at No.2 (Northern) ARD Sheffield as training aeroplanes with enlarged fins.
This Depot had their own serial blocks allocated for re-builds etc.

Nick
From where does the info come from that C3381 - 3480 was a canx batch of 1½ Strutters?
I have the H-P bit!

Re: Photos Royal Aircraft Factory Aircraft

Hi Clint

What makes you think the aircraft is with 13 Sq?
As per its surviving documents it was assigned to 21 Sq on 1 April 1918 and was SOC
from that unit 9 Aug 1918.

As far as I can tell its visible marking is consistent with that unit once it discarded its
dumbbell (23 March 1918).

The problem arises what was it doing at Harlaxton? Was it flown back to UK during its active
service with 21Sq and for some reason ended up visiting Harlaxton or was it flown back to
UK after its service with 21 Sq and ended up with a Training Unit at said airfield?
The only relevant unit using Harlaxton post 9 August was 40 TDS (ex 28 & 53 TrgSqds).

If the photo was taken at Harlaxton I rather prefer it was used by 40 TDS and that it simply
inherited its former markings.

Re: Photos Royal Aircraft Factory Aircraft

Hi Stig,

Happy to accept your correction - 21 Squadron it is. I'm unable to open the excel docs on the RFC serials site on my PC. I therefore took the 13 Sq information from an erroneous source, but should have checked further anyway.

Would you mind trying to open the B5001-B9999 file at http://airhistory.org.uk/rfc/aircraft.html I would like to know whether the problem lies with my exceL/PC or the site in question.

For the rest well I defer to you.Personally I'm sceptical about Harlaxton as a location for B6673 at all. I suspect that there is a single source for all the Harlaxton photos the seller is offering, but not all were taken at the same location. This I belive may well be the case with the site I used for the erroneous 13 Sq identification, but see for yourself

Re: Photos Royal Aircraft Factory Aircraft

Hi Clint

I have no problem opening the site in question. My problem is to open Excel files since I have
Open Office.

The files open up alright but old Bill wants payment up front, so no thanks....

If we discard Harlaxton as the place the photo was taken, unit aircraft frequently used each
others airfields for many reasons, so a 21Sq RE.8 could easily have visited a 13Sq airfield, or vice-versa.

Cheers
Stig
