Re: eBay: Allied intrest
Hello,
Quite a bit of misinformation published about the loss of No.83 Sqn Hampden I P4340 on 12/13 August, 1940. Here are the pilot's (40050 A/F/L Allen Roy MULLIGAN RAF), own words: F/Lt A. R. Mulligan - Sydney, Australia - Pilot - "Hampden" - Night of 12/13 August 1940. "Low level attack on the Dortmund-Ems Canal - went in No.2 at 50 feet. Light flak and mgs set starboard engine on fire - climbed to about 400 feet. Port engine vibrating badly and aileron controls U/S. Managed to stop a flat spin and then crash landed in a field. Burning starboard engine torn out of mainplane. Navigator & W/Op killed. Airscrew from port engine came through side of cockpit pinning me in. Port engine caught fire - flames increased for a short time - then went out. Goons arrived but I could not be released until airscrew was removed which took 4 and-a-half hours - but there was no hurry they could have taken 4 years!" (Signed) A. R. Mulligan, Sagan, August, 1944. See: Tales from the Sagan Woods. Gould, A. H. DFC (40692, RAF - 61 Sqn. POW 20/21 June, 1940) Bundanoon(NSW):Author,1994. pp.8 (& p.57 of Gould's POW Journal, reproduced in this ref). Col. |
Re: eBay: Allied intrest
Gentlemen,
The answer is maybe not so strange. P4340 was either loaned or transferred to 83 Squadron at short notice. If a permanent transfer was intended maybe the paperwork was never completed due to the almost immediate loss in action. P4340 was flown operationally four times by 61 Squadron during early August 1940 (Nights 2/3, 4/5, 7/8 and 10/11). On the last two missions it suffered from vibration and compass problems. Perhaps this made it an easy choice for 61 Squadron to part with. Therefore it could only have reached 83 Squadron on either August 11th or 12th, so there was no time to change the markings. The above interpretation based on the 61 and 83 Squadron ORBs, the Scampton Appendices for August 1940 and the Form 78 aircraft record card for P4340 (which has no mention of 83 Squadron). Hope this helps. Thanks for putting up the links to those photos. Regards, Martin Gleeson. |

Re: eBay: Allied intrest
Peter,
This Blenheim is P4927 'BL-D' of 40 Squadron, lost on 6 June 1940. There are many photos of this wreck, often showing it in an even more weather-beaten state. However the image you have turned up is new to me. So thanks for that. Regards, Martin Gleeson. |

Re: eBay: Allied intrest
Hallo Faenor,
Blenheim Belgium 1940 https://www.ebay.de/itm/Foto-Flugzeu...IAAOSwF59cbbo~ Although no markings are visible this Blenheim is 'TR-X' of 59 Squadron, serial unknown, based on other EBay photos. However the photo was taken at Rouen-Boos airfield in France after the aircraft was damaged by ground fire on 6 June 1940 during a reconnaissance flight. It was abandoned there. At the time it was being flown by a 53 Squadron crew and was part of a combined 53/59 Squadron detachment operating from Rouen-Boos. I have not been able to find the serial for this Blenheim but would dearly love to. Can anyone provide an ID or a photo showing the serial ? Regards, Martin Gleeson. |

you mean this one? http://www.modelari.org/viewtopic.php?f=40&t=2403 last digit looks like 4859 ? but I´m not sure. Maybe it is this machine - L4859 from 25.5.1940 - see the post number 3 http://www.rafcommands.com/archive/11921.php Faenor |
Re: eBay: Allied intrest
Hello Faenor,
Thanks for sharing the photo and links. I cannot read any part of the serial number unfortunately. Is there any way of enhancing that part of the photo ? L4859 of 59 Squadron was lost on 15 May 1940. It has been written that it 'crashed' and was coded 'TR-W'. However I have seen no photos to prove this and I do not know the source for the code. One of the crew was killed and two became POWs. There is an AIR 81 casualty file for this loss but it will be several months before I can obtain a copy. That might reveal more. If 'TR-X' turns out to be L4859 that will be a very valuable clarification to 59 Squadron losses. Regards, Martin. |

check this link - there are another 2 photos of same plane: http://www.modelari.org/viewtopic.php?f=40&t=551 I post the photo, and I see (not on 100%), that last digit is probably 59 ....this is only photos of TR machines, which looks fine and not after crash or belly - landing. Maybe somebody have better photo and can confirm the serial number of this plane. Faenor |
Re: eBay: Allied intrest
Faenor,
Thanks again for the link and photos. On the very last photo if I look at it closely and in a certain light I sometimes see what I think is '59'. This is really interesting. However unless someone turns up a photo with a sharper image of the serial we cannot be sure it is L4859. As stated in my last post I also need to see what the AIR 81 casualty file for this aircraft records. Regards, Martin. |
Re: eBay: Allied intrest
I have pic of this aircraft here you can just make out the L and 4 at the serial No pics must wait until I return to uk as posting from Wuxi is poor at best

Re: eBay: Allied intrest
Ref post #466.
Some weeks ago I said I would post pics of Blenheim TR-X, the id of the pics is based upon various items such as the position of the right Airlieron, trhe band on the wing and the scruffy bunch wandering around the machine. On examination of the pic TR-X 5 the letter L can be made out followed by a possible 4 other numbers can be seen but my kit cannot make them out, all pics came from old e-bay sales..hope they help |
