Hi Clint

There are speculations this was F5685 (see Gifts of War page 437)

Hi Stig There is a photo of F5685 in Les Rogers' "SE5A Squadrons with 84 Sqn. in post-March markings; from the right side with a presentation inscription ( a different style though) but not legible I'm afraid.

This is it, not very good quality but at least no mistaking the serial. Not Clint's I think.
( Ram Gopal Singh was the last Raja Of Manda-Allahabad, Bahadur is a title of respect.)

Nicholas King is a man of few words.....

.....but I agree Nick!

Unless re-done, this is not the aircraft Clint is looking for....

Re: Photos Royal Aircraft Factory Aircraft

Still can't find the serial of Clint's SE but I think this is London Colney (as suggested elsewhere), the buildings on the right being the 3 permanent wooden hangars (called "Flight Sheds") with flying field to the left. There were 3 temporary ones to the west and the trees in background were woods. The photograph is labelled St. Albans, only 4 miles away.

The airfield photo is not dated and is not quite orientated N-S. The field was originally "Shenley" after the nearby village but changed as being too similar to "Kenley".
SE5as were in use for training (41 TDS ?) in late 1918 with guns removed.

Re: Photos Royal Aircraft Factory Aircraft

Thanks for your efforts on the S.E.5a Nick. Hopefully something definite appears in due course, although the circumstantial evidence you have provided about the locationand hence possible unit seems pretty convincing.

Now a photo of R.E.8 A3880, I've a feeling that the photo is a reproduction, but new to myself in any case. Could someone provide the identity of the unit of this machine bearing a soon to become fashionable emblem?

Re: Photos Royal Aircraft Factory Aircraft

Clint there are a couple of other photos of RE8s with these markings ( I've got a note of A4501) from what I've learnt this is most likely 5TDS at Easton-on-the hill (Collyweston) in Northants; they had 3 flights so maybe a Flight symbol. A3881 was with 53TS and crashed at Harlaxton 11 Feb. 1918.
