If this is Blenheim abd date 10.5.1940 is correct, then only possibilities are: 21. SQ - squadron code YH and then full marking is YHoX or YHoY - but I have no losses for this squadron 57. SQ - squadron code DX and then full marking is DXoY - this squadron lost L9245 over Netherland - https://aviation-safety.net/wikibase/wiki.php?id=54116 But who knows …. Faenor |

1 & 2. The first two Hurricane photos show P2644 which crashed at Marignane in France on 8 June 1940 during the first overland Hurricane ferry flight from England to the Middle East. 3. Almost certainly in Greece 1941 due to the mountain in the background and the Vokes filter. 4. P2873 'K' of 607 Squadron, damaged in France 18 May 1940 and later burnt. 5. No idea. 6. Hurricane Z4320 'WR' of 40 SAAF Squadron, crash-landed in the desert 10 April 1942. 9. Tomahawk 'KJ-I' of 4 SAAF Squadron crash-landed in the desert. Regards, Martin Gleeson. |

IF the EBay photo caption location and date of 10 May 1940 is correct then do not forget 18 Squadron (code 'WV') which flew Blenheims. This unit lost two Blenheims in or near the Netherlands on 10 May 1940, with some or all of the crew killed in each case. L1405, crashed near Wesel, Germany. L8860, crashed near Venlo. The aircraft individual letters are unknown to me. Regards, Martin. |

Hi Martin, The first two Hurricane photos does not show an A/c which crashed at Marignane in France on 8 June 1940. If it crashed during a ferry flight from England to the Middle East this a/c is given at Loudun (300 kms south of Caen) The many photos of this a/c taken by WH eliminate a plane crashed on the side of Marseille (Marignane) in June 1940 … Bertrand |
Re: eBay: Allied intrest
Bertrand,
I think you are correct. The two photos show what looks like a German soldier from a motorcycle or reconnaissance unit. They certainly did not reach Marseilles in 1940 ! Thanks for the correction. Regards, Martin. |

is there more info about the machine P2644 from Marseille? Is there any photo or info in chronicle of some unit? I have a theory, that this machine is from 8.6.1940 and crashed somewhere in north-west France and pilot escape via south France and Marseille. Faenor |

Re: eBay: Allied intrest
Blenheim TR-X photos, May 1940.
These were discussed during February (posts 457-466) and March (476). It now seems certain that the hitherto unidentified TR-X is L4859 of 59 Squadron. This was forced landed on 15 May 1940 due to enemy action near Gembes in southern Belgium. Thanks to colleagues posting photos and enhancing them I can just barely read parts of the serial in two photos; 'L4...' and '...59'. The location 'Gembes' and month are written on the back of at least one photo. I stated back in February I hoped to see the AIR 81/2824 casualty file for this loss and have now done so. The serial is not mentioned but the wireless operator/air gunner in his 1945 POW questionnaire recorded the aircraft was 'X' and the location a village two miles from Gembes. Also that the aircraft was forced landed and did not crash. Unusually there is a second AIR 81 file for this loss which I have not seen yet. I am delighted that TR-x has been identified at last and thankful to all who helped. Regards, Martin Gleeson. |

Re: eBay: Allied intrest
Must confess I am more interested in which HP Harrow we are looking at.
Were there many lost in France? Cheers Stig |
Re: eBay: Allied intrest
Hi Stig
it seems that there are not many Harrow lost in France Could it been this one 20/06/1940 : K6996 of n°271 sqdn ? Bertrand |

RE:
http://forum.12oclockhigh.net/showth...t=22844&page=2 Harrow abandoned in a damaged state on a French airfield (K6996, lost 20-6-1940). Does anyone know which airfield this is ? - I have checked 271 sqn ORB and it has no mention of this or the airfield - @MartinGleeson - Is this the same photo you have seen before ? Thanks Paul |
Re: eBay: Allied intrest
Back home again and checked the Harrows.
Well Bertrand/Paul, as far as I can see K6996 was the only Harrow specifically lost in France. Many other aircraft are seemingly SOC rather randomly late 1940 and I suppose there is always a possibillity another aircraft could have been involved, but I put my 10 cents on K6996.... Cheers Stig |

Re: eBay: Allied intrest
Harrow photos, Posts 546 and 550.
. Faenor and Paul, . Paul, this is a new image to me but definitely the same aircraft as seen in other EBay photos. . As you state there is no mention of this loss in the 271 Squadron ORB. The last record of it in the Form 541 part of the ORB is on 10 June 1940 when it was flown back late that day to England from le Mans in France. K6996 is not recorded again in the F.541 for the rest of June or all of July 1940. . Apparently the last RAF aircraft left France on June 18th and Jersey on June 20th. If the date of 20 June 1940 is correct then it is possible the Harrow photos were taken at St. Helier airfield in Jersey. The Struck Off Charge date for K6996 is 20 June 1940, so it could have been lost on this date or earlier. . Faenor, the Hurricane in the photo you found is interesting. 501 Squadron left Jersey on June 20th. While their ORB does not mention the Harrow or any of their Hurricanes left behind it seems they did leave at least one. Peter Cornwell in his 'THE BATTLE OF FRANCE, THEN AND NOW' records they abandoned Hurricane P3347 at St. Helier and possibly others. As the new photo shows both aircraft burnt out this could have been carried out by the British just before evacuation. . Air-Britain in 'THE K FILE' and 'AEROMILITARIA', autumn 2006 issue has the same service history and fate based on the Form 78 aircraft history card in both works. I strongly caution against their use of the letter 'N' for this Harrow however. It appears to be based on a photo of a Harrow 'N' on page 111 of the 'AEROMILITARIA' issue and which they state to be K6996. I cannot read the serial in the photo but it seems to be a photo taken after 1940. There appears to be a Hawker Typhoon with a Sky fuselage band in the background. The Harrow also has the name 'Sparrow' on the nose, which again I believe was used post-1940. Maybe someone has a better copy of this photo ? Should it actually show K6996 then of course we are looking for a new serial for the burnt Harrow photos ! . I cannot find an AIR 81 casualty file for this Harrow loss, indicating there were no personnel casualties. No Form 1180 accident card either. . I hope we can sort this little mystery out. . Regards, . Martin Gleeson. |

Re: eBay: Allied intrest
Re Harrow K6996
While I see this lost reported on 20th June 1940 it is possible that it was actually lost earlier than this but only reported as such when the crew returned home. I must say aI doubt Jersey as even though there was evacuation flights from the airport it seems to have been done by 24 Sqn and Jersey Airlines DH86's - I would also say that if it was Jersey I would have thought that such a significant loss would have been recorded there before now My favourite location is Nantes as at this time the airport had a large and varied collection of aircraft involved in the evacuation and at one point the airport was reported to be on fire June 18th? The Hurricane may provide a clue as at least 2 were known to have been set fire to there Hurricane P3683 Burnt on evacuation from Nantes, June 18th, 1940 Hurricane P3045 was burnt on the evacuation at Nantes. So my guess is the loss was prior to the 20th June possibly around 18th or before Paul |

Hello Ed,
Thanks for a clearer photo of the much discussed Blenheim L4859 TR-X of 59 Squadron, forced to land in Belgium on 15 May 1940 and captured. See also my post #537. I can just about make out some of the serial number. Regards, Martin Gleeson. |

Either 90 or 141 Sqdn ?
