Re: eBay: Allied intrest
I am pretty certain but not 100% that this is ..
Swordfish l L2817 T4F 767 Sdn, Kalafrana Malta the T4F again not 100% certain relates to the Squadron and aircraft (this is FAA code ) think the I is actually an F with part of the F hidden by poor pic, when I am 100% I will post again. regards for further info see..http://forum.12oclockhigh.net/archiv...p?t-20821.html |

Since the aircraft obviously came down on Sicily during some offensive attack, I would say it shows an aircraft from 830 Sq, which continued to use 767 Sq codes after it was formed from said unit on 1 July 1940. I don't think it is L2817 since that aircraft was re-coded T4R (according to Air Britains FAA 1939-45 book), but how certain that statement is I don't know. Said book has no fate for L2817, so.... As far as I can judge 84 Sq received a rather substantial batch, L1378 to 1393, but to state which one is far more difficult.... Those which are abvious are L1379, L1391, L1392 and possibly L1390 Cheers Stig |

re #612
Now we have an interesting problem wonder where the guys got the info for this |
Re: eBay: Allied intrest

When 18 Swordfish from 767 Sq was transiting through France in June 1940 it arrived to Bône on 19 June 1940. 12 aircraft went to Malta and these 12 became 830 Sq on 1 July 1940. The remaining six was met up and landed on HMS Ark Royal on 20 June and were offloaded at Gibraltar on the 22nd and taken back to England on the 25th. 767 Sq was officially reformed at Arbroath 8 July 1940. Most likely the individual who made the drawings was not aware that in Sep 1940 the unit had been renamed 830 Sq and that said unit continued to use the old 767 Sq code for a while. All this are in the eminent Air Britain books about the FAA units and aircraft. Cheers Stig |

An example of too many photos I see where positive identification of crashed Allied aircraft is not possible unless something is written on the back of the photos.

Re: eBay: Allied intrest
Thats funny, the two photos of the Hurricane taken from the right hand side are the same rail car, NT 0358, same airframe with the letter V.
using the RAFCommands database of serials: http://www.rafcommands.com/database/serials/ There was a P2808 Hurricane I delivered prior to Apr 1940 Z2808 Hurricane II delivered after Jan 41 with no specific history recorded The serial numbers been cut away between shots. |
Re: eBay: Allied intrest
In previous photos, I have seen a total of four British aircraft on French flatbed rail cars in similar disrepair. They must have been relatively popular at the time.

Re: eBay: Allied intrest
Interesting the L208x is either L2081 or L2088 - It looks like it may have turned over on landing ..
Both lost May 1940 with 601 Sqn The pilots of these are confused internet sources maybe someone can confirm serial from photo the other 'V' has to be P2808 Can anyone work out the correct |

Re: eBay: Allied intrest
Alex
We are looking at 2 different photos of Hurricanes on rail tracks P2808 and L205x The second L205x is almost certainly L2050 which has been quoted to me independently over the weekend by two different people who I consulted, including Martin Gleeson who posts on this site he sent me the following L2050 The No.6 Repair & Salvage Unit ORB (AIR 29/802) under 28 May 1940 has the following after noting a salvage party had been sent to the 501 Sqn. aerodrome to salvage or repair a number of Hurricanes. "Hurricane L2050 (tail unit destroyed in taxying accident) dismantled and despatched to UK". This matches the tail damage picture in the photo, but does not match the obvious combat damage. My other source says for L2050 incident "12 May 1940 F/O Eustace 'Gus' Holden #37970 - crash landed after return damage in combat with Dornier Do 17" I note the wings of L2050 are missing and probably retained at 501 Sqn to repair other aircraft. I had L2056 as a possibility for the aircraft on the rail truck, but the No.6 R&SU ORB with the above for L2050 records; "Port plane replaced on Hurricane L2056, damaged in combat by machine gun bullets." on the night of August 7, 1938 Miller was piloting Hawker Demon K8199 of 64 Sqn with AC1 Howard Ambrose Peyton-Bruhl #523036 as gunner when they both bailed out of the aircraft at Royson, near Duxford, Cambridgeshire after he ran out of fuel in fog. This was one of four 64 Sqn Demons that had to be abandoned that night for similar reasons the other being: K8200, K8201 and K8185. The 64 Sqn aircraft were undertaking Co-Operation Exercises with Searchlight Battalions at the time A fifth machine Demon K8187 Force landed in fog and undershot the runway at Digby "Crew of 2 Neither occupant was injured" The aircraft were abandoned over Cambridgeshire, Peterborough and Leicester Hawker Demon K8199 was probably the one that crashed at about 4am in a wheatfield at Little Chishill, Cambs. Just prior to it crashing it had been "picked out" by the beam of a searchlight crew Paul |
Re: eBay: Allied intrest
for clarity here are all other L205x Hurricanes and it can be shown that it could only be L2050 or L2056 and L2056 did not have combat damage and also looks like serious enough to injure pilot and based on date and fact Sqn retreating through France at time before evacuation to June 17th 1940 and then to UK
