More likely "C3" or "c3" or "C-3":

kurfürst,

Thanks for this very detailed explanation of the entire situation with DB 601N engines on both the 109 and the 110. This will be extremely helpful in interpreting photos in order to build accurate profiles for these two a/c during the latter half of 1940 for the EoE Project. The single Bf109E/N equipped unit is identified above as II./JG26, which is consistent with photographic info I've seen of some of their a/c carrying 100-octane triangles. It would also appear that the four Bf110 Gruppen equipped with the engine type during the latter part of 1940 would have been II and III./ZG26, II./ZG76 and ErprGr210.

My further questions:

1) Would the outboard side of the engine cowlings on Bf110s in these four units all have had a white "N" painted on it if the specific a/c was one of the DB 601N-equipped a/c? This seems to have been the case based on my recollection of the available photography.

2) Further, to your knowledge is there any source for actual W.Nr.s of either the Bf109s or Bf110s using the DB601N engines during 1940? I know that's a very long shot, but I have to ask.

in answer to #2 question, yes, several through the Sept 30 date. All from JG 26.

John,

How can I get a list of these W.Nr.s?

Hi Larry and all,
Seeing this thread I remember we had a discussion at LEMB where I have mentioned some Bf109Es with II./JG26 with markings indicating use of 100 Octane fuel. Thanks to Kurfürst for his article which was a great help. See these entries:
