Re: JG 54

That would place Schmitt in IV/JG54. Some of the claims for that unit are not available yet and probably will show up in one of the future volumes of JFV. Wolfgang Spaete's book was what I was first interested in on joining here. Some of his claims while with the IV were answered here.

Aha, I see. Well from talking to Schmitt and also on the inside of the cover of his book: "Nordpolflug" which was published few years ago, he claims having been shot down twice. I belive he flew both Me109 and F190. He told me of some victories but I don't remember details of them. He must have some claims according to that.

That's nice to hear, if you have any information about Dieter Schmitt (see above) then I would love to know it.

No, that was nightfighter ace Dietrich Schmidt-Barbo. I was there when Schmidt and Martin met in the Netherlands.

Cheers,

John

Are you sure he is not the same, the one I am refferring to lived in Heidelberg somewhere and did alot of n-atlantic single engine crossings (ferry flights in the 80's and 90's). This pic of him you can look at: http://www.jg54greenhearts.com/gunther.htm

Hi Atlason,

And did you try to get permission from your friend, and ask BA/MA for his file? Also Wast may have some info...the oficial archoves may know some basic data, as e.g. unit assignment...
