Thanks Chris, that clears things up somewhat. Surprisingly the organisational structure of the Groupe, and style of numbering individual Escadrilles is quite similar to the JAAF Sentai format, whereby the Sentai is the main organisation, not the componet Chutai.

So what happened to the great Squadron histories of the individual Escadrilles of WWI? Did they simply go by the board, as in cease to exist?

The histories are still carried. The last (as in latest chronologically) French aircraft I modelled was a Jaguar, but it carried its Escadrille badge from WW1 on one side of the fin.
