I think the stories were built around the FW-190 grip and the cowling piece. Don't feel to bad. Flight Journal did a large story on him. |

As this tale brings to light, and maybe it has been discussed before, but are the Allied pilots who scored against all three Axis: the Germans, the Italians, and the Japanese?

For what its worth,
The only USAAF ace of WWII by the name of Payne is a L/C Carl. W. Payne with 6 confirmed. They both did fly P-47s, however. Carl retired from the AF but was killed in crash in 1956. Source: American Fighter Aces Album Regards, Hugh "Tailspin" |
