Re: Lt. Werner Schmidt, 1/KG55
After mulling over the above information, I have come to the following conclusions:
(1) Werner (DOB: 01.05.20) and Werner –Artur are in fact the same guy. We should have noticed this earlier. These happen quite frequently and we eliminate them as we find them. This is a real problem with those with common names. Another pain are those with variations in first names, either in spelling or use of prefered first name. (2) None of the guys under discussion is the one who went MIA at Stalingrad. Nothing really fits! (3) The Ritterkreuz guy was clearly a Major in the photo and is the guy we refer to in our notes. The photo was obviously taken a time after conferral of the award. As for the Rittekreuz.de site, I have referred to it extensively and I have found it very reliable but not perfect. Another good Ritterkreuz site is: http://www.ritterkreuztraeger-1939-4...-Luftwaffe.htm This site is stunning in its detail BUT it is missing at least half of the RK holders (including many “biggies”)! The level of detail on this site varies from skeletal to Wow! Well worth a look. On the other hand: http://www.luftwaffe.cz/experten.html has a lot of information, but it is confined to fighter guys only. The info is of wobbly reliability and should be checked against Prien or similarly reliable sources. Well, we shall note the info above and likely update our files (now standing at 26,304 guys and 1,130 pages, and growing fast). LdZ DGS |
