Re: Ju88 Loss Data for I./KG 54, October 1942
Hi, Byron!
Looks like you and your friends should get the trusty old sidescan sonar out.... or maybe it is a problem inside the Alonissos park?? But if not located yet should be quite an interesting wreck, impact damage probably rather low since the crew made it uninjured. http://www.ahs.no/ref_db/lw_loss_pub...?lossid=142176 Regards, Andreas B |
Re: Ju88 Loss Data for I./KG 54, October 1942

Re: Ju88 Loss Data for I./KG 54, October 1942
@ Andreas hi,
That`s a good idea with a lot of difficulties 1) the sidescaner belongs to the maritime institute of Patras university, the professor is a very kind man, but one has to pay for all expences. Investigating with private sidescaners is in Greece vorbidden because of the antiquities. 2) one has to visit first the island and ask the fishermen if they know anything about the wreck, where, how deep, etc. otherwise you need weeks to scan the area. Since these wrecks are good fisching places, the fishermen keep their mouth shut. 3) to get the permission in this protected area is an other thing. @ Remi you are right we have two different infos 27.05.42 Ju 88 A4 (W.Nr. 140225) 100% Notlandung See bei Insel Psathoura, and FF. Ltn. Hasso Holst, Ju 88 A4 (B3+MH, W.Nr. 140212) 100%, Notlandung See bei der Insel Psathura infolge Brennstoffmangel 26.05.42, Besatzung gerettet, Flugzeug versank, which is the right one? we have also the following losses: 28.05.42 Ju 88 A4 (W.Nr. 4535) 100% Notlandung See Golf von Patra, 30.05.42 Ju 88 A4 (W.Nr. 1043) 20% Rollschaden Fl.Pl. Tymbakion, 04.06.42 Ju 52 A4 (W.Nr. 2640) 20% Fahrwerkschaden Fl.Pl. Tymbakion, 08.06.42 Ju 52 A4 (W.Nr. 5897) 15% Bruchlandung infolge Motorstörung, Fl.Pl. Tymbakion, 08.06.42 Ju 52 A4 (W.Nr. 120244) 10% Bruchlandung (?), 20.09.42 Ju 88 A4 (W.Nr. 5675) 25% beim Start ausgebrochen Iraklion Any idea about the Staffel these planes belonged? |
Re: Ju88 Loss Data for I./KG 54, October 1942

Re: Ju88 Loss Data for I./KG 54, October 1942
Very interesting post gentlemen. I have in my hands a greek travelguide of the Sporades Islands. In this guide there is a photo of the Ju-88 wreck of Psathura island! There are also some infos given by a diver named Giorgos Drosakis , the man who have found it in 1991. Among these infos there is the date of the incident , May 1942. According to this article the only eyewitnesses of the incident was the lighthouse-keeper of Psathura island and his family.

Re: Ju88 Loss Data for I./KG 54, October 1942
Hello dear Tasos,
could you give us some further information regarding the discovery of that specific airplane. I will really appreciate that and I think the other memebers as well. 1. Is the plane salvaged and if yes do you know weather is recovered and displayed to the public? Maybe in Tatoi or Tanagra? 2. If is not salvaged do you know if is still, untouched and in good shape, there? 3. Do you know how deep does it lay? The deeper the better because of the souvenir collectors. 4. Are you so kind to scan the article (included photos) and the information of Mr. Giorgos Drosakis and attach it here? I thank you very much in advance for all your efforts!!! DG |
Re: Ju88 Loss Data for I./KG 54, October 1942
Just wish to echo what DG said - I would love to read about (or view) any additional details regarding the wreckage.
Best Regards, Paul |

Hello Dimitris,
First of all many congratulations for your discoveries at the island of Milos and Kea. Secondly my responds to your questions are the following: 1. As far as I know the airplane is not salvaged by the Greek Air Force. The travel guide I have in my hands was edited in 2008 so I don;t know if in the past year happened anything. 2. I don;t know the exact condition of the airplane wreckage. Taking in concern the existing photo I would say that it is not in very good condition. 3.The depth , according to the diver , is 33 meters. 4.Yes , I am kind enough to attach a scanned copy of the article!!!!!! :-) Hope I help you in anyway.
