An earlier thread I've started deals with Khazanov's personal view on Hartmann's victory tally:

Friends:

In forthcoming book will be nothing more or new comparing with Vitaly Gorbatch's book. Its just another "cutting a greens from tree" of Khazanov, as was his previous book on air war over Kursk, published in Japan.

BTW got interesting news from Vitaly: next field of research and a subject of book will be air battle over Dnieper, autumn 1943.

Evgeny, That is great news about his next book. Russian text or is he expanding into English(I hope!).

So do you think this is just a re-write on his book with Gorbach on the defensive period?

Also my mistake on thinking it was Erik Mombeeck who wrote that reply when it was Hans Ring.

Actually I hope the criticism provides some encouragement for the russian authors to come forth from their "self-imposed isolation" and translate their works into English. I am very much interested in any serious book on the Eastern Front air war, much more so than the umpteenth book on the US bomber campaign or the Defense of the Reich. ;)

Gents: if You want a good book about Citadelle, try to contact with Vitaly and translate his book :) His problem is his very bad english.

About Khazanov (sorry, but after last his "fails" I just cant be silent), I will quote myself posted on LEMB:
Quote:

Gents:

I had a discussions about that book and about that author with many Russian authors. Also, I've read many of his books and articles. So. my 5cents will be:

  • Author is very "free" with his suggestions, which producing many speculations, even with actions, largely presented in VVS documents (which he was too lazy to search or analyse).
  • On the same time, author position himself as a very wisdom and popular (had many interviews on radio) historian.
  • Seems for us (Russian speaking community), that he is just great money hunter.

About subject book: there is no new info after his co-work with Vitaly Gorbach (which book about Air Battle over Citadel is perfect).

As for me, I would not buy that book.

Hello
as one who doesn’t have a copy of Khazanov’s & Gorbach’s book but interested in the Battle of Kursk and who didn’t have read new books on airwar of that battle during past couple decades I bought Khazanov’s book. Having read first 45 pages, ie the defensive phase of the fighting on the northern salient of the Kursk bulge, I’d say not bad. There is some annoying typos and the English is in places a bit awkward and many photos are seen before but there are also many photos new to me, some of them quite interesting, Khazanov also mentioned the effects of battles in Mediterranean TO to the LW in the East and mentioned, only very briefly but anyway, the effect of partisan and ADD attacks to LW supply situation. One gets info on forces used, how they were used, the losses and the intensity of the battle.

Juha
