Re: One eye aces
Saburo Sakai doesn't actually qualify as an 'ace with one eye'. After he suffered such terrible wounds over Guadalcanal in 1942 he didn't fly ops for almost two years. When he did return to active ops on Iwo Jima (1944) he found he was so limited in sight ability he only managed to score twice more. By his own admission it was with luck as much as anything else.
After Iwo he didn't fly ops until the very last month of the war. In between he was an instructor. |
