Hi all,

I have documented 22 nighttime plus 2 daylight victories that were achieved by Hptm. Kamp.

Cheers, Theo

As Kamp was Gruppenkommandeur for III./NJG 4 in 1944 he was stationed at Juvincourt in France. During this time the entire NJG 4 was based in France with Stab./NJG 4 at Chenay (although I know the Geschwaderkommodore was also stationed at Juvincourt for a while), I./NJG 4 at Florennes, II./NJG 4 at St. Diziers, Dijon and Coulommiers, III./NJG 4 at Juvincourt. I have found all of the fields using Google maps except Chenay, anyone have a clue of where this might be? Also, to make things clear, was Kamp shot down flying a Ju 88 or a Bf 109?

Hi Thimmig.

There are several Chenay's in France, but I would assume that this is Chenay in Marne. It is located about 15km south of Juvincourt. I had a look on google-map and I think that I can spot the remains of an airfield just to the south east of the village.

Stab/NJG 4 was indeed addressed at Chenay from April to the second half of August 1944. This is confirmed in surviving German documents (NARA RG 242, T-971 rolls 8 and 18) and in the DEFE 3 ULTRA documentation. However, there was no airfield, landing ground, fieldstrip, emergency landing ground, satellite or dummy located there, according both German and Allied sources (2,500+ pages of material covering airfields in France). What we have here is the very common occurrence of a Geschwaderstab setting up its offices in a cushy château within commuting distance of an airfield for reasons of comfort and as protection from enemy air attacks on the airfield. If aircraft were assigned to the Stab, they were maintained at the airfield, of course. Accommodations 15-16 km from the airfield were not unusual for a headquarters and staff.

Thank you Larry and Ian! Do the documents state where exactly Stab./NJG 4 where stationed or is it only the name of the nearest village?

The airfield was located 2.5 km SSW of Juvincourt village. Officers and flying personnel were billeted in Cormicy, 5.25 km south of the airfield. Unfortunately, the name of the château or address of the building used by the Stab in or near Chenay is not given. The only way of finding out, I think, might be from the local historical records. The surviving German documents usually do not identify addresses, but ULTRA decrypts sometimes do. Mostly, though, Allied intelligence had to rely on the resistance network for specific addresses.
