Re: Yank in Bomber Command
Steve,
The online NARA enlistment records give Fred V. Cornwell with Army Serial Number 10601382. According to his record he enlisted in the Air Corps as a Staff Sergeant at an undefined location on 1 September 1943, which would have followed his tour with 218 Squadon. Residence is given as Fairfield, Connecticut, and he was born in Pennsylvania in 1921. Regards, Leendert |
Re: Yank in Bomber Command
Hi Leendert "Freddie" Cornwall was not posted off No.218 Squadron until December 9th 1943 being sent to the 12th Replacement Control Depot a full month after conclusion of his operational tour. I would suggest that the date of September 1st 1943 was the date he transferred from the RAF / RCAF to the USAAF. Did the NARA record any details on his post 218 squadron career ? Thanks again Leendert Steve |
Re: Yank in Bomber Command
Fred Vincent Cornwell, Sr from Frederick MD, died on 23 Dec 1999. The obituary in the Frederick News Post on 24 Dec mentions service in the US Army Air Corps but nothing about the RAF. There was a surviving son, Fred Vincent, living in Hagerstown, MD at the time.

Hi Mate,
Thank you for the post. Funny no mention of his RAF career? Regards Smudger |
