Hi Guys

I have an answer to the DKiG debate. I now have a copy of the citation of the award, he was awarded it on 13th June 1944. Also have a picture of him wearing it and his wife, which would suggest that he was on leave after 13th June 1944, also he is not wearing the Ritterkreuz, though I have a small document stating he was a Ritterkreuz wearer dated 30th April 1944!

An explaination about the micro films is that unsually the micro films have a typed-out sheet of all that Staffel's claims until around 23rd July 1942, though some Staffel's continue until much later, after this date we have a daily claims sheet, well two for each day, one in the West, and one against Russians, the sub list is a pre-daily entry list which lists problem claims for all units i.e A.S.M or V.N.E claims, this means usually a problem with the claim like lake or air witness, or unsure about the time of the claim e.t.c. The actually daily micro film entries end in December 1944, but quite a few Staffel claims sheets have not survived, or have yet to be discovered. There are also claims sheets for Staffel's existing for all units(more or less) that just give Time and Date, no pilot name, type e.t.c. Hope this ixplaination is understandable?

Re: Schlachtflieger Ofw Helmut mischke Questions and answers

Hi Guys

Mischke's daughter Monika states that her Grandmother told her tht on the 3rd May 1945 her son's unit was ordered to surrender all aircraft in Flensburg. He(Mischke) was not asked to accompany them, but told his mother that he would not let his comrades do this alone, his mother said "Don't go, you will not come back" to which he laughed and said that she had never said anything like that before with all his actions, and now he was just transfering an aircraft. His mother also told Monika that Mischke had already been offered a test pilot job at Messerschmidt.

So it's hard to see his motive to abscond to Sweden. Can anybody dig up this order?

Kind Regards

Johannes

Hi Johannes,

Helmut Wenk was one of the men on this III./S.G. 1 transfer flight to Flensburg, and he told us the story of the loss of a FW 190 D-9 pilot: "... they still shot down two of our pilots, and the Feldwebel in the 190 D was one of them". Although Helmut couldn't recall the pilot's name, in my interview notes I have written "[maybe Fw. Mischke]". Mischke was definitely not flying to Sweden, and I'm not sure where that story orginated.

Cheers,
Andrew A.

Hi Andrew

Thanks for your input. Yes, it would appear that the swedish business is false, but we were told there was no proof. What with the job offer, young family e.t.c, and above all that they were surrendering not to the Russians, everything points to not flying to sweden.

Johannes

German records say that Ofw. Mischke was killed on May 2nd, 1945 near Sandbek/Kappeln. This date would mean during the transfer from Wismar to Flensburg. The crash location lies exactly on the flight from W. to F. So probably shot down during transfer.

Hi guys

There is an inference that (Ltn) Petzold was the other III/SG.1 pilot shot down that day by friendly flak. Is that correct? If so, what was his full identity?

Cheers
Brian
