Hello Melvin,

3./ u. 4./F 123 (Eins.) (later NAGr. 1) where at the airfield Trier-Euren from about 5. - 9. September 1944 before they moved for the new Airfield Niedermendig. People here wonder that the 109 start when the Air Raid Warning was given, but do not attack any allied planes! They do not know, this pilots where not Jagdflieger!! Uffz. Klems crashed at Oktober 1944 with his 109 near the small village of Ulmen (enginetroubel) and was lightly wounded. He and his fellow pilots known the airfield Trier-Euren and Wittlich-Wengerohr very well, so I think that was the reason why he tried to land the day he died. About 30 years ago little parts from his plane and one MG 131 in perfect condition where salved at the former airfield Euren. An air recce photo from 7th PG (25. Dezember 1944)shown clearly the point of impact from Klems plane!
In Februar 1945 NAGr. 1 has an heavy dogfight with P-51 from 354th FG overe the "Hunsrück", four Bf 109 lost, one of them flown by Uffz. Windsberg (bailed out). Parts of his 109 where saved by the local priest and remain until today!!! OLtn. Kohla served after the war with the new Luftwaffe, if have photos from him when he was with NAGr. 1

Remi, Schuster was still with 4./(F)123 in May 44 in France. I have a photo of him stood in front of a "Blue" nosed Bf 109.

Hans, That is very interesting information and very useful. I would like to find out more about Werner Kohla, maybe someone has information regarding his time in the Bundesluftwaffe after the war. Does anyone know where he was born etc?

Attached a picture of Uffz. Windbergs and Oblt. Kohla and Ofw. Mombartz at I believe Niedermendig.

Regards,

Melvin

Hello Melvin,
I will take a look over my infos about OLtn. Kohla (at home!) I think he promoted up to Oberst in the new Luftwaffe and ret. about 1980 (I not sure about this, I must look into my paperwar!!!) I have copies from letters he wrote when one of his men MIA during November & Dezember 1944. They are different as the normal letters about the "Heldentod"!!.

It's probably the same man but the mission you mention was ordered by 4.(F)/123 on 22 August. Staffel Kaatsch started forming two days later and as far as I know included no pilots from 4.(F)/123, just one of their aircraft.
