Re: Ar 234 Friedrich Bruchlos

Frank,
maybe there was no direct support of the bridgehead, which not means that there were no US-Fighters around...

According to the JG 2 war diary for 09.03.1945, the III.Gruppe had aerial combat with P-51 in the Remagen area, while trying to bomb the bridge - "One P-51 probably destroyed".

Further: On March 9th, several BGs of the 9.BD attacked targets in the Wiesbaden area. At least on the way back some units came across the area S of Remagen. I. and II./JG 2 got in touch with A- 26, B-26 and P-47 "...in the area SE of Bonn". This is verified by both sources, mentioned JG 2 diary and the Mission Summary #65 of 9.BD (Medium), Morning Missions for March 9th.

Further interesting: 416.BG reported "...a twin engined a/c (probably Me 210 or 410) (!) flew below formation near Westerburg, being pursued by Mustang."

Maybe sombody can check the 9.AF claims on this date?

08.03.1945: The Ju 87 belonged to 1., 2. and 3./NSGr.1, this unit had at least six losses on this day.

Re: Ar 234 Friedrich Bruchlos

I know this is an old thread...
But,
Does anyone know which model of AR234 it was?

Ron Cole (Aviation Artist) has a print (with fragment) of this aircraft, but it shows a C-3 model or V-8.. but just can't believe that version was actually used in combat.

Thanks
Motch

Hello Motch,

From Smith & Creek, Arado 234 Blitz, (1992), p. 255:

"Ar 234 B, W.Nr.140451-500

140589
First flew January 30, 1945, to 9./KG 76 as F1+AS, shot down by flak over Remagen on March 9, 1945, Ofw. Friedrich Bruchlos missing..."

Note: the bomber version is usually given as Ar 234 B-2.

best regards,

Jim Geens
