One shot ...

Dear Richard,

As for the second shot I guess I've been victim of either a download accident or a memory failure! :) Though I'm sure I got it .. But this is a memory failure characteristic, isn't it?

Regards, Franck.

Dear Franck,

I have the second one you posted. I was more interested in the photo of the aircraft being hauled to the scrapyard.

When you get as old as I am, there are certainly instances of "knowing" I have something, and not being able to find it. Of course, one could give the excuse of not being able to find "The Ark of the Covenent" lost somewhere in a government warehouse, courtesy of "Raiders of the Lost Ark".

Regards,
Richard

Interesting photo. Shows the original hiding point of "White 34" brought later to the Brunnthal dump. Watch the camo trees placed aside and lying on the rollway.
A former A-1a/U3 recce variant (FWE Eger?) brought back to A-1a standard with a fighter nose and flown by III./EJG 2. Came to lie beneath W.Nr.111685 "9K+FH" found at Hofolding forest.
Also visible is the result of two well-placed handgrenades...

Regards

Roland

Richard, there really is such a place as in Raiders... Jim K and I were researching in the archives of Silver Hill (or whatever they call it these days) years ago. The card catalogue had so many mistakes and misidentities it was unreal. You call up a microfilm on "X" and you get a Bf109. Lord knows what else is in that "warehouse".

Re: Me262 .. a new photo.

Dear John,

Larry Wilson was the "daddy" at Silver Hill of the microfilms listed in the Desk Catalog of Captured German and Japanese Air-Technical documents. Larry spent much of his time trying to convert the card catalog into an electronic database and, if he found an error, he'd correct it. Some researchers also helped. A lot of the microfilms weren't cataloged or the cataloging was extremely superficial. A lot of the documents on cataloged microfilms simply weren't listed in the card catalog.

One sort of had to feel one's way around, hoping that microfilms containing items of interest had also other documents of interest on them that hadn't been cataloged. Some series were so poorly microfilmed that the documents on them were re-microfilmed, which explained why there were previous catalog numbers on them.

I took a particular fascination to documents that had been translated by the USAAF, Navy, or contractors thereof. Many catalog cards contained cross reference to these translation reports and, with Larry's help, I compiled a cross reference listing of them.

I believe there was still more work to do on the uncataloged reels when Larry retired, but he gave it his best. As for the uncataloged documents interspersed amongst supposedly cataloged reels, these are definitely of the Ark of the Covenent type.

Things could be worse. The NASM microfilms are more or less cataloged and on 35 mm film, meaning that each reel might contain maybe 1,200-1,500 frames or so. On the other hand, the USAAF microfilms at NARA II are on 16 mm film, are only superficially described, have no document index, and one can get dizzy after an hour or so scanning them as the frames slowly pass by. There are a lot more than 1,500 frames on each reel.

Regards,
Richard

Are these pictures of the same aircraft?

Please bear with me if I screw up. I'm posting pictures for the first time.

Jim

Gentlemen,

If you scroll down on this site to the picture of the Me 262 above the caption "Messerschmitt Me 323 Gigant", it supposedly shows Me 262 WNr. 111747 on an autobahn. As you can see, there is a white gravel path parallel to the roadway suspiciously similar to that in the photo of 'white outline 34' seen in the first post and in pictures of 'white 9" WNr. 111617? and 'white 2" WNr. 170071 where they were found originally.
Many photos of WNr. 111747 show SSgt Honeycutt's crew Company B of the 439th Signal Construction Battalion, 64th Fighter Wing, XII Tactical Air Command. The blog of the 439th Signal Construction Battalion mistakenly gives the werknummer as 111074 and the location as Hofoldinger Forest.

My question: Has anyone seen photographic evidence of a similar white gravel path running parallel to the autobahn east of Sheppach?

Best regards,
Jim
