Re: Question about RAF /SOE Lysander Nav methods

Thanks for feedback From other historians I was told that Eureka and Rebecca in a way or an other came into German hands, which means transmis. along with aircrafts were intercepted and captured at some point in time. Was wondering if the unit transmitted also homing range except azimuth to the beacon BR Alex K |
Re: Question about RAF /SOE Lysander Nav methods
I was thinking of the Eureka up the church tower; it was never found.

Re: Question about RAF /SOE Lysander Nav methods
Wing Cmdr Frank Griffiths was a friend of my father's and I have just had another look at his book. The Eurekas were at the top of Rheims and Orleans Cathedrals and flying at 2,000 feet Griffiths says the range was 60 miles. Once they got the bearing they dropped down again to around 200ft.
In the book there is also mention of 'S' Phones used in 1943 to call up the reception party. |

Thanks for the update. If Eurekas reception / transmission was 2000 / 60 miles slant range that means this unit was about the cost of a RR luxury car mounted unsupervised on top of a church . Where this book can be found and whats the title , would like to buy a copy Thanks Alex K |

Re: Question about RAF /SOE Lysander Nav methods
This is a really vague question.... has a "John James "Jackie" Tinning" been mentioned in any of the SOE-related books?

Thanks a lot for the very interesting link! Made only a very brief look on it but clearly very informative site, only problem is to find enough time to go through all that info. Juha |

There are some other excellent books on SOE Section F OPS into France , one of which are the memoirs of the Romanian Vera Atkins. Obviously this woman was a double agent part of Philby's network a traitor who sent 80 % of Section F SOE agents into Gestapo/SD and Abwehr hands and sure death . Her department was a total mess , Phliby disclosed in the post WWII era due lots of facts and details about failed OSE Ops to NKVD / KGB, etc etc - Irronically the SD / Abwehr officer Horst Kopkow who ordered the execution of the British agents worked in the post WWII era for MI6 Either way I both the book u've mentioned for a proud price . |
