I concur with Mikael: the pilot was convinced to have shot down a D.VII or what he deemed to be a Fokker. Maybe he watched H.Hughes' "HellsAngels" as a boy and decided to become a fighter pilot - Hughes used genuine fighter planes for his picture.
I'm sure the pilot saw a plane with a boxy fuselage and the characteristical tailfin and a bulky engine similar to the D.VII.
Currently I'm thinking of one of the Czech AERO and AVIA designs - the Luftwaffe captured a lot of them in 1938...
