Many thanks. Will be interesting to know where at Salerno area he was shot down. Some idea to ask IDPF file?

Salerno,

Earlier reference to Sicily perhaps (only) because 33rd FG was stationed there in Sep 1943.

where death of Major Crast is commemorated.

Group or squadron report for 15 Sep 1943 may shed more light. Salerno is perfectly possible if mission of 33rd FG was to that area that day.

A little addition: on 13 Sep 1943 33rd FG had moved to Paestum airfield, which I think is near Salerno?
This brings Major Crast cose to the area...

Thanks for newspaper. Journal wrote that news of deceased came 2 months after. This confim in some way that said of eyewitness. He said us that some time after crash, when germans go some allied military coma on the ground to take remains of pilot.
