quote from First page....:
".....Unfortunately, the lack of historiography has enabled some opportunistic authors in recent years to publish several works of pseudo-research,in which disreputable attempts have been made to misrepresent the achievements of ... ....." I am wondering if he has Anyone particular on his mind. Did he decide to pull punches(not to call out someone's name) after he made such statement ? |

For sure he has somebody, or more people, in his mind, as he mentions "authors" and "several works". How does the sentence end? Is he referring to the misrepresentation of the Soviet, or the German side of the story?

I see. Then it can be either Russian, or foreign authors. I can ask him directly.

Just about every book written by Western authors since the end of the war have used German resources, both primary and secondary, when writing about the air war during the first few weeks of Barbarossa. Mikhail Timin disputes and condemns most or all of the German accounts in his writings of this period, so perhaps these are the books and authors he is talking about.

..my copy arrived - very impressed (although I'm usually quite easy to please and have limited knowledge on Russia/Red Army historiography). Page count is 400 (exactly), not the 528 indicated in various places, with the events of 22 Jun 1941 kicking off on page 209, with an account from Trautloft. Translation is just a tad clunky and long-winded; "headquarters section " tactical number yellow 11", "insignia denoting his victories" etc etc. No German terminology used anywhere, aside from rank. It's all 'squadrons' 'wings' 'headquarters officer' etc etc Lots of profile artworks and excellent they are too - if a little small. Around 300 photos

Thanks for the helpful review. It's a shame that translators, editors and publishers eradicate foreign language titles, job positions, etc., and replace these with English translations in those cases where the book is being directed at an English-speaking readership. Some of the authenticity and flavor or the work is lost when they do this, especially when it would be so easy to compile and add a glossary to the book. While it is true that many of us can easily reverse the English terms back into German, it is probably also true that a much smaller number can do this from English back into Russian. Hence, the justification for a glossary.

Neil, are you sure about the page count? Occcasionally photo sections are not paginated along main text pages. E.g. original JJF edition of Hubert Meyer's 12. SS gave an impression of lesser pages due to this.
