Good afternoon,

was John Voll flying a P-51B or a P-51D when scoring his 21 kills ?

12 of Voll's VCs were in P-51D

Alfred. 2 squadrons of the 311FBG had A-36A Invaders in India - Burma in late 1943-early 1944 before they got P-51As and Bs; the "Apache" was the P-51-NA with 4 cannon but neither name used much.
You can tell the A-36s ( apart from bomb racks) by the smaller ( 30") fuselage insignia marked further forward to leave room for the serial on the rear fuselage, also a different camouflage division.

Hello Buckeye,

...and also by the dive brakes, right ?

So that's CBI, not ETO or PTO like I said. And for the names, I will not argue how much official were the various ones but just say that one the North American documents you can only found the name "Mustang".

Are you sure of that ? I would swear I've seen P-51As with the serial on the fuselage...

Also the A-36 had dive brakes, and a wing armament different from most Mustangs.

All 3 ( P-51-NA / P-51A / A-36) had fuselage serials but the P-51-NA had a larger insignia. Certainly there were other differences. I think the 27FBG came up with " Invader" before the Sicily operation.

Hello Drondog,

can you tell me which type was used by Voll for his other 9 kills ?

Cheers,

Michael
