Re: Fw. Werner Martin, Stab IV.(Sturm)/JG 3
Hi Faenor
I cross-check that. Sorry but I was under a bit of time pressure earlier, but I have now added in claim areas, and forenames the best I can. Kind Regards Johannes |

This incident has been covered repeatedly from the American side, so I easily found a few links, which might be worth looking at before Faenor has time to respond. Two of the links are old threads on this forum. To summarise, 34 Marauders were lost: https://ww2aircraft.net/forum/thread...ws.1558/page-2 http://www.b26.com/page/marauder_mis...er_23_1944.htm http://www.aviationarchaeology.com/s...sp?offset=7000 http://forum.12oclockhigh.net/showthread.php?t=43404 http://forum.12oclockhigh.net/showthread.php?t=4940 Regards, Dan |

Dan
According to Losses of the 8th and 9th Air Forces Vol 5, 40 Marauders were lost and eight more salvaged upon return. I have not gone through each of these 48 losses to determine if they were caused by fighters/flak or if some were due to 'simple' technical reasons. To me it suffice to say it must have been a horrible day. One of the worst in USAAF (USAF) history no doubt. B Rgds Stig |

Thank you for providing data from the best research work on the subject. 48 lost bombers is a large number, but the Germans suffered very heavy losses on this day too, 135 according to the ww2aircraft.net thread linked to above. In that context, this was a very successful day for the USAAF, especially since many ground targets were attacked and the aerial resupply of Bastogne began on this day. This was the day when Allied air power put an end to all German hopes of further success in the Ardennes. Regards, Dan |
