Matti: Thanks for this. Looking at this, it would appear that Don Caldwell has got things wrong. Uffz Mondry was in 7./JG 26 in 1941 getting his first kill 16 Feb 41. The photos in his book is not the same as the photo I have of Mondry (he appears quite tall whilst in my photo is a good head shorter than everyone else). He then says Fw Georg Mondry was injured 5 April 1942 still with 7 Staffel. He then says on 31 May 43, Lt Rolf-Georg Mondry of 5./JG 26 was killed! VDK say Georg was killed near Mariakirche on 31 May 43. So Uffz Rolf Mondry 7 Staffel Lt Georg Mondry 5 Staffel

Also to follow this through with regard to Caldwell's mistake

There is a an Uffz Mondry making three claims with 7./JG 26 over Malta and Libya. I take it that this is now Rolf Mondry and not Georg as per Caldwell Vol 1

Cheers

Yes, that is the Mondry that sprang to mind when I read Chris' initial post. Now I realise we are actually talking about two separate pilots with the same unusual surname

Well Nick

I also thought it was a strange co-incidence, so Caldwell's mistake is very explainable.
But then I did a "Nick Beale", I checked the yellow pages for Germany, and was quite surprised to see that there are plenty of Mondrys even today in Germany. I was not able to count how many, but since a constant scrolling only produced more and more, I gave up.:)

So perhaps the name Mondry was not all that rare after all during the war?

Also forgot to say thanks to Matti for putting this quite odd fact on our maps.

Cheers
Stig
