Thanks Jochn your comments are appreciated and interesting.

I am especially interesting in your comments regarding the location of the white band. This was the reason that I was thrown off the scent during my earlier research over the last 19 years as I could not find another aircraft with similar markings that match the time frame or location.

I do know that my father, the one in the great coat, commented to my mother that North Africa was the coldest place he had ever been.

For some reason I have a time frame of November 1942 in my mind for the photo but I will have to go over my fathers records again. That would explain the cold bit some what.

Researching my fathers unit is also hard as records have not been kept by the Australian Army as well as I had hoped. I will provide further details once I get more info.

OK more information

I have found my fathers original photo and it is dated christmas 1941....

Looks like my mothers writing and I wonder if she dated it latter and meant christmas 1942.

This would explain the overcoat.

Australian Archives indicated it could take oto 3 months to get me dads service record so I can not establish a time line for when he was at El Adem.

I have some possible dates that the photo could have been taken between. These are July 1941 to April 1942.

This means that the A/C could not be Erich Krenzke a/c.

I have found that JG53 markings are similar. Could I dare suggest that the plane in the photo is from JG 53.

I understand that JG 53 was supplementing JG 27 in North Africa in 1942.

Comments please

Re: Help Required II./ JG 27 North Africa 1942

I now have the service record of my father and I am afraid that the plane in the photo is not that of Erich Krenzke.

My father was in North Africa from July 1941 with a return to Australian soil of April 1942 and Erich was shot down in May 1942.

I would like to thank all that replied to this post and when I have further information I will post it up.

I will contiinue to research this plane.

Regards

Rick Maccullagh
