Keith, the air war on the Eastern front has barely been researched at all, and I do not know of anyone who has worked on this specific case. I am working on it now, for an article due soon. For the moment, all that is can be said for certain is that the Soviet units did not claim a single He 177 in this area, and did not report any deliberate bomber interceptions. The encounters, if they did in fact occur, were accidental. I am working on developing a thorough account right now. Brian's information will help a great deal.
