Re: Photo Nieuport

Hello,

Thanks to everyone for their responses.

There are some photographs and a colour profile of N1831 in German markings at:

https://www.pinterest.co.uk/pin/291959988326149761/

and speaking of Nieuport machines in foreign colours there is a photo of Italian Nieuport 17 N3242 (at least I assume that it is both a Nieuport 17 and Italian) at:

https://www.ebay.it/itm/Grande-Guerr...UAAOSwRsJeVZV0

and some less clear Italian machines here:

Clint

It is not N3242 but Ni 3242. The latter looks like Model 11 to me and with such a high Italian serial number is most likely a Macchi built one. The Italian company started its days as Nieuport-Macchi with the sole pupose of building Niuport models under licence. They "advanced" up the ladder by also building the Hanriot HD.I....

They also designed some parasol types based upon the Nieuport fuselage.
A very interesting company

Re: Photo Nieuport

Hi Stig. 3242 is in full Italian markings ie. cowling red-white-green sections and red-green panels under the wings. The serial style is Macchi. It was quite common for personal emblems to be painted over the fuselage cocardes.

I think the 2-seater pictured above with damaged tail is a Nie.10, the 12 had a large clear panel in the top wing, wider chord top wing and the tops of the "V" struts were further apart.

Re: Photo Nieuport

Indeed Nick

However since Macchi also imported some basic airframes before starting their own production and most likely painted them up as well in Italian colours, I simply was cautious :)

With regard to the Nie 10 or 12, I think you might be correct

Cheers
Stig

PS: Nice to see more individuals joining Clint and me in the discussion of real "oldtimer" airframes. Very rewarding!!

Re: Photo Nieuport

Stig. This shows the cowling markings in red-white-green which I mentioned (sometimes reversed); a Nie.11 from 78th Sqd. Mostly seen on Type 11s.
The propeller seems to be solid not laminated?

Hello,

Currently on ebay a photo of a Nieuport serial N275. at:

https://www.ebay.fr/itm/Aviation-pho...UAAOSwClNeblG3

The seller has it as a Nieuport XII, but is it in fact a Nieuport 10?

Re: Photo Nieuport

Looks like a single-seater to me...
Model 11 perhaps??

Re: Photo Nieuport

Hi Stig. It's a Nieuport 10C.1 single seater, this is N.237 from the same batch; unit is MS.12 (note parasols in background).

Re: Photo Nieuport

Hello Nick,

Thanks for the response and particularly the image. I must admit my thinking when I identified the aircraft was based on the serial number. Apart from the useful site at :

http://albindenis.free.fr/Site_escad...fabricants.htm

can you recommend any good single source for Nieuport serials?

Regards,

Clint

Re: Photo Nieuport

Thanks Nick

So they came as single-seaters as well.
No wonder I have problems with these early Nieuports.

Cheers
Stig
