I can't read French either, at least not completely, but over the years I've figured out enough that I can kinda get by and figure out the details I'm looking for. A pocket dictionary helps. Same with German - I even have a Finnish dictionary and can figure some of the language out. You don't need to learn the whole language just those bits associated with avaition and air combat.
