Dear kormoran, et al,

First, thank you for the condolences on the forthcoming spam. Actually, I don't like spam any more than anyone else. With only 8 messages posted so far, my guess is that you are new to TOCH! In the old days, it was almost a sense of honor to post your e-mail address so others could reach you directly. Unfortunately, the hackers out there have made that practice a bit perilous. I thought about it, but decided to go ahead, somewhat in the vein of being honorable and hoping for a similar attitude from Sudek13. Alas, so far, nary a word. In his defense, I can easily recognize that, if he could be readily reached, he would be overwhelmed with requests.

The flip side of his being very, very wealthy is that, if any of you are about to retire and wish to buy that Caribbean island, selling your precious photos on eBay might be a way to have a good, steady income in your leisure years. The thought is tempting, considering how many photos I actually have...

Regards,
Richard

Hi Richard,

a real enthusiast and collector don't sells his collection of precious photos
because it's part of his life or soul, call it like you want, I don't find the
perfect English words. I know, I exaggerate a little bid ;-) But I feel a
little bid of irony in your words and I think you hit the nail on the head!

You can make a little bid business with some photos in the present, lots
of professional traders and private sellers make good money - nobody
knows how long this works in this way. I heared about collectors and
publishers who sold their complete collection at ebay or to sudek directly.
When you become old and you don't want that your collection will be
splitted - maybe, it's a possibility.
On the other hand it's a pleasure to bid and win against these high
bidders and it's always a satisfaction when some other bidders win
beautiful photos too. And if you find these photos published a little bid
later, it's really great!
I also heard that the archive will support researcher and publisher in
the future but in return the members of the archive are also interested
in support of these researchers. Maybe a fair deal. Long time ago
some members of this board speculated about how this could work
as I remember right.

OK, I hope that everybody will have fun in our hobby - also in the future.

With the best wishes for the new year 2007,
Sven.

I think sudek13 is the best historian in the world because he is the richer. If he knew - it is not the case - what is really History, he would not buy what someone else whant to have. He is not the only one to study and want to preserve archives or photos. That's good to be the king !! I can not share his pseudo altruism. I do not believe in Santa Claus. Altruism is before the selling, not after.

Gentlemen,

Where is this going? eBay means high bidder wins. It's always been that way with auctions, public or private.

So I say, cool off, consider that you've seen photographs that
A) May never have seen the light of day had the owner not thought to make a few dollars on eBay.
B) If you can't afford the original, you can at least see it and I know some of you download them.

Ed

ed,
Spot on. Everything you say is correct.

canonne,
I have to say that your post is very flawed (I'm being very diplomatic, here, I could have been far stronger). You know nothing whatsoever about the guy.
