Re: Photo of an Me 262 of KG(J) 54 from a recently expired eBay posting
I should add three another points:
5. Only numeric codes are present on KG(J) 6 Me 262s and these are plain without outlines: I. Gruppe: 7. = white; 8. = red; 9. = yellow 6. KG(J) 54’s Me 262s have larger numbers that are outlined: I. Gruppe: 1. = white; 2. = black; 3. = yellow II. Gruppe: red (see below) III. Gruppe: 7. = ?; 8. = ?; 9. = yellow 6. KG(J) 54’s I. and III. Gruppen Me 262s wore different style and colour “Totenkopfwappen”: I. = white; III. = yellow. 7. The handful (4) Me 262s of II. Gruppe's "Ausbildungs-Kommando" were from I. Gruppe and photos of one show it has a I. Gruppe wappen. Their numbers were plain red for the II. Gruppe. More documents and photos are required to better understand these interesting units. Hi David,
Thank you for those valuable clues to identifying the units of Me 262s with karobands. Your ability to see patterns in the markings of Me 262s amazes me. The only thing I can add is that all Me 262 karobands seem to be positioned close to or abutting the balkenkreuz except for "B3+HK" and "Ge. 3" which are distanced from the balkenkreuz and under the leading edge of the horizontal stabilizer. all the best, jim |

Thanks Jim,
I have been looking at these units for many years and when a new photo emerges it is a real treat. I can add that the KG(J) 54 Me 262 aircraft retained their original Gruppe and Staffel markings when the RV bands were applied. These were in different styles and colours and includes the Totenkopfwappen, nose tip and in the case III./54 the diagonal sash under the fuselage (though painted over). Cheers, David |
