Re: 5th Photo Reconnaissance Group

Indeed Alex

However Aleks started to mix in 5PRS into the picture, so I just wanted to be sure....it is easy to get distracted!

I take from your answer, your details thus apply for the 5PRG

Cheers
Stig

MACR 8097

Thank you very much indeed . I have had this MACR and perhaps now is the
time to address few questions :

1) Does anyone have a photo of an F-5C or F-5G nicknamed "Air Express " or
" Denver Doll ? "

2) Since WX was CAVU (CAVOK) and the pilot failed to contact the sector controller
after his last R/T are there any exact estimates of his last track or position beside
the MACR ( from other publications , books , NARA etc )

3) MACR states 5th Photographic Sqd / 15th CM Sqd of the 12th Air Force but in
1944 the 5th PRS was part of the 5th PRG of 15th AF and no longer with 12th AF
so what are those ammendments and why ?

3a) On the target Bank out of MACR , what target could have been on Vrsac Mountains ?
where is Teuis M/Y and if Alna Iulia (Alba Iulia) and other were mispelled ,sounds really wierd .

4) Can anyone provide more details as into the torpedoed ship on board with 32nd RSQ
pilots and ground crew members lost at sea enroute to Italy ?

Cheers
Alex K

PS : There's a book about the P-38 "Denver Doll " but thats not the MIA pilot who was
lost with this aircraft https://www.amazon.com/dp/1980381623...4pt5LPFIRFWTNA

Could you write the date when it happened ? :( Can anyone provide more details as into the torpedoed ship on board with 32nd RSQ pilots and ground crew members lost at sea enroute to Italy )

Aleks

You are again requesting answers about 5 PRS which was not a part of the 5 PRG except one flight for a very short moment.

The basic belonging of 5 PRS was with 3 PRG!
Quoting Air Force Combat Units by Maurer Maurer which says

3 PRG (12 AF)
5 PRS 1942-1945
12 PRS 1942-1945
13 PRS 1942-1943
14 PRS 1942-1943
15 PRS 1942-1944
23 PRS 1944-1945

5 PRG (12 AF > 15 AF Oct 1944)
15 PRS 1944-1945
21 PRS 1942-1943
22 PRS 1942-1943
23 PRS 1942-1944
24 PRS 1942-1943
32 PRS 1944-1945
37 PRS 1944-1945

Checking the same author and his Combat Squadrons of the Air Force in WW II he says:
5 PRS > 12 AF (19 Sep 1942 - attached to 3 PRG to 12 Sep 1945)
Flight attached to 5 PRG 10 March to 5 May 1944)

Your request regarding
1944/08/30 - MACR 8097 - 42-67117 - Hartwick, George jr. cannot have anything to do with 5 PRS since that unit did not belong to 5 PRG at the time, but to 3 PRG which was a 12 AF unit which did not do any reconnaissance flights over Romania.

I have no idea how flexible the 12 and 15 AF units were and if they side stepped all basic orders (as quoted above), so I would be very interested to find out the correct belongings of these identified MACR.

As per Alex S they were all from the 5 PRG and if Maurer Maurer is correct only three MACR are a possible match for 5 PRS (during the flight's stay with 5 PRG)
1944/04/12 - MACR 3963 - 42-13318 - Gravitt, Emmett C.
1944/04/28 - MACR 4195 - 42-13110 - Hebeler, George H.
1944/04/29 - MACR 4224 - 42-13124 - Agliany, Raoul (nmi).

So if Alex S has identified MACR 8097 as a 5 PRG loss then it is not possible for it to have been a 5PRS loss unless the whole quoted belonging of these units are wrong.

So can someone clarify the correct scenario here please??

Cheers
Stig
