Re: Hurricane - forced landing Saudi Arabia - April 1942
Thanks for all further replies. Unfortunately the correspondence regarding the three damaged Hurricanes and the subsequent salvage diificulties gives no names of the stranded pilots.
The Hurricane of pilot Saczweski landed all right, just no more petrol. Regards, Leendert |
Re: Hurricane - forced landing Saudi Arabia - April 1942
Interesting that a memorandum ( 22 Jan.1936) from RAF Hinaidi Iraq to Bahrain/ Muharraq ordered flights to keep outside of territorial limits along the HASA coast on the Gulf ie. E.Saudi Arabia; Muharraq was on the Basra ( Shaibah) route to Karachi and no doubt used as a stop-over as there was an RAF installation there but no units assigned. Sharjah in Oman was another. Ras Tanura is about 40 m. NW of Bahrain.
I didn't see any reference to a navigating aircraft for the flight in the file; for the Africa route they used Hudsons, Blenheims, Baltimores/ Marylands or Bostons. Nick |
