Re: Liner 'City of Brisbane' bombed 2 August 1940
Hi guys
Much appreciated. Andy: the second date was 18 August (not 16th). Ongoing saga! Cheers Brian |
Re: Liner 'City of Brisbane' bombed 2 August 1940
Brian,
Thanks for the correction - Nothing on 18.8.40 either. You have a copy of the AWDs covering 11.8.40-7.9.40 that I included when I sent you all of the other files (e.g. Lagebericht, Cabinet Papers, Luftflotte 3 Meldungen etc) . It may be worth looking through all of them ...just in case. |
Re: Liner 'City of Brisbane' bombed 2 August 1940
Where was the ship sailing from and what was its destination ?
May well have been deck cargo being transported. I have seen small ships and locomotives as deck cargo, so why not an aircraft that may have been damaged by the bombing ? |

Here's the relevant Luftwaffe situation reports (no mention of any aircraft crashing onto a ship)

Re: Liner 'City of Brisbane' bombed 2 August 1940
Different ship, different location, different aircraft type. Looks like two stories have been mixed up with no evidence at all to support finding a German aircraft on the Brisbane over 2 weeks after she was attacked not by Ju 87s but Bf 110s

Also, this:
https://www.battle-of-britain.org.uk...940-day-by-day The entry under 2 August has an additional photograph and identifies the He115 that hit the SS Highlander as belonging to "3./KG 506" [sic, 3./Kü.Fl.Gr. 506). |
Re: Liner 'City of Brisbane' bombed 2 August 1940
German Docs in Russia, OKL documents, Akte 100 includes a schedule (attached to Lagemeldung 394) of ships claimed sunk or damaged during August. This includes for 2 August 1940:
Z.G. 210 [sic], 3 x SC 250, sunk 8000-ton merchant ship north west of Margate. Stern torn off in first attack. In second attack, ship sunk by direct hit amidships. The same unit was credited with a 1000-tonner sunk east of Harwich that day with 8 x SC 500 and 12 x SC 50 (2 direct hits). Credits on the 18th went to II./KG 2 (2 hits on 4000-ton Merchant ship east of Margate; II./KG 53, 4000-ton merchant ship sunk by three direct hits east of Southend). |
