Re: Reginald Newton Scott and two brothers

There is (a) Reginald Newton Scott in the London Gazette of 7 Nov 1941: https://www.thegazette.co.uk/London/.../6446/data.pdf

In another LG (24 Sep 1948) it says: Reginald Newton SCOTT ( 394746 ) from Special List ( ex Ind . Army ) Emerg . Commn . , to be Lt. , 8th June 1948 , with seniority 2nd Oct. 1942 .
Heading is 'Infantry' with Royal Lincolnshire Regiment. 1st Bn of that Reg't was in Burma.

Will look further after social commitments.

Thank You Leendert

Very interesting. Can I ask "silly question of the day"?
What exactly was the London Gazette and why are individuals mentioned in it?

Also another question out of ignorance. I notice he is mentioned as a Gunner.
Was that actually a rank? If yes, where on the "ladder" was that?

Cheers
Stig

Re: Reginald Newton Scott and two brothers

For the (London) Gazette: see https://www.thegazette.co.uk/ It's where the UK government publishes its public records.

A gunner in the artillery is equivalent to the rank of private in other army branches.

Meanwhile, his rank of major appears to have been a honorary one. See https://www.thegazette.co.uk/London/...supplement/165

Thanks again Leendert

Much appreciated! Long and interesting history indeed
Never bothered much about the Artillery, so basically a gunner is the lowest rank there is.
I let his relative check out what it says in more detail
