Gopod point, may not have been a US B24 - worth a look.

Since negative results are still results (!) - 178 Squadron RAF also flew Liberators in this theatre; I checked the ORBs and on 15/16 August 1944, their a/c were operating at night and all 6 sorties (3 in support of warsaw Uprising, 3 nickelling S France) returned successfully in the early hours of 16th.

Hi Chaps

It could well be a mis-sighting, I dont know. I do not believe it is either German or RAF, the RAF losses the previous night were all over Poland. Ive checked three days back in case they stayed afloat for a long while, but no one matches.

Not all puzzles get to be solved!
