Re: A Few Questions to Forgotten Heroes - Aces of the Royal Hungarian Air Force in WWII (second revised, expanded edition)
Congratulations on a very successful book, great work, a lot of heart, very careful edition.
A few questions: How many fighter pilots had served in Hungarian aviation from 1938-1945? How many of them reported at least one victory? I wonder if you got a 20 to 80 ratio in your book (20 percent of the pilots had 80 percent of the victories)? How do you estimate the number of real wins (planes completely destroyed) to report successes (planes shot down) by Hungarian pilots? regards, mirekw |
Re: Forgotten Heroes - Aces of the Royal Hungarian Air Force in WWII (second revised, expanded edition)
Good evening Gentlemen,
can anybody tell how how many pilots shared in the shared kill of Dezsö Szentgyörgyi ? Cheers, Michael |
Re: Forgotten Heroes - Aces of the Royal Hungarian Air Force in WWII (second revised, expanded edition)
Zászlós (Flight Officer) Dezső Szentgyörgyi had two shared 'kills'. Details in Magyar Warriors, vol. 2, published by Helion & Co., in 2017, pages 155-157.

Re: Forgotten Heroes - Aces of the Royal Hungarian Air Force in WWII (second revised, expanded edition)
Very good news Nick
Especially for those of us who bought it when new..... (Sorry N, one of those days I suppose.... :) ) Cheers Stig |
Re: Forgotten Heroes - Aces of the Royal Hungarian Air Force in WWII (second revised, expanded edition)
Where were the hardback and the paperback printed in? Helion seems to use a Maltese printer for properly printed titles while UK-based ones for the cheaper (digitally-printed) ones.

The typeset was done by Mach 3 Solutions Ltd, England Actual printing was done in Malta by Gutenberg Press at Tarxien. If you are after what kind of paper that was used or judging the quality of said paper, I am not qualified to do so, except that it certainly is very good and fulfil at least my standards for an excellent quality. Some photos are too small for my liking, but perhaps that is a minor point for you. The binding is top quality as well. With regard to the paperback, I will not buy it and thus cannot comment on it... Cheers Stig |
Re: Forgotten Heroes - Aces of the Royal Hungarian Air Force in WWII (second revised, expanded edition)
Thanks Stig! That's exactly what I needed. It is perhaps pertinent to note that at least Lev Lopukhosvky's Vyazma Catastrophe exists in at least two hardback editions of which only is properly printed and bound in Malta while the other is a poor-quality digital print.

Re: Forgotten Heroes - Aces of the Royal Hungarian Air Force in WWII (second revised, expanded edition)
Good morning Gentlemen,
is the total score of aerial kills of the Hungarian Air Force in WW2 known ? I wish you a good weekend, Michael |
Re: Forgotten Heroes - Aces of the Royal Hungarian Air Force in WWII (second revised, expanded edition)
In the annexes of vol. 2 of Hungarian Fighter Colours (MMP Books, 2014), pages 357-392, we included all known air victory claims reported by Hungarian fighter and fighter-bomber pilots (with a caveat on page 356). However, we didn't count them, so the total is unknown to me. Additionally, victory claims reported by other Hungarian airmen (incl. those scored by firing from the ground) should be added as well. I am afraid, no accurate final score can be tallied, unfortunately.

Re: Forgotten Heroes - Aces of the Royal Hungarian Air Force in WWII (second revised, expanded edition)
Good afternoon Dénes,
thanks for the hint. I think the Hugarians claimed about 500 kills in WW2. Have a fine week, Michael |
Re: Forgotten Heroes - Aces of the Royal Hungarian Air Force in WWII (second revised, expanded edition)
Hi Knusel, I found a good statistics regarding Hungarian air victory claims in a book by Punka, Sárhidai and Zsák, from 2017.
The overall total is actually way more than 500, as follows: Fighter and fighter bomber claims: 578 (+44) Long-range recce crews: 33 (+1) Short-range recce crews: 15 "Fast bomber" crews: 13 Bombers: 14 Dive bombers: 6 Shot down from ground by air force personnel: 6 -------------------------------------------------------- Total: 665 (+45) = 710 victory *claims* |
Re: Forgotten Heroes - Aces of the Royal Hungarian Air Force in WWII (second revised, expanded edition)
Dénes
What does the (+44) etc indicate? Cheers Stig |
Re: Forgotten Heroes - Aces of the Royal Hungarian Air Force in WWII (second revised, expanded edition)
It's claimed, but unconfirmed victories.

Re: Forgotten Heroes - Aces of the Royal Hungarian Air Force in WWII (second revised, expanded edition)
Aha :)
Thanks for the explanation. Cheers Stig |
Re: Forgotten Heroes - Aces of the Royal Hungarian Air Force in WWII (second revised, expanded edition)
Good afternoon Dénes,
thanks for the interesting table. I assume all claims by Bf109 pilots belong to the 'Fighter and fighter bomber' category ? Cheers, Michael |
Re: Forgotten Heroes - Aces of the Royal Hungarian Air Force in WWII (second revised, expanded edition)
Hi Knusel, no, Hungarian fighter and fighter-bomber pilots flew several aircraft types, not only the Bf 109G; from the FIAT CR.32 to the Fw 190F.
If you are interested in more details, I suggest you to open a new thread, in the Axis section, so not to overload this one. |
Re: Forgotten Heroes - Aces of the Royal Hungarian Air Force in WWII (second revised, expanded edition)
Good evening Dénes,
OK. I'm trying to find out what is the overall number of Bf109 kills, you know. I think the Hungarians contributed about 560 to that total. I still have the OSPREY volume about the Hungarian aces in my book shelf but no time to read it. Work sucks. I wish you a good start into the weekend, sincerely, Michael |
