Re: Photo Morane Saulnier
Hi Stig,
I had indeed already looked and indeed the location of both photographs is the same place. No surprise there. You would expect both machines to be constructed at the same location and lined up for a photo session upon completion. You reference the latest french expertise, so clearly you've read something post Soltan and Davilla that I haven't - would you care to reveal the work in question please. The airframe we're looking at looks identical to that of the Type S MS.625, but the engines are different. Are they 300 hp Panhard?. I don't know. If indeed Panhard 300 hp were used on the Type X (and the tailplane is very suggestive that we are looking at a Type X)? Does anything else that used that engine spring to mind.? Edit Actually as far as the aircraft in the photo is concerned, the 300 hp Panahard must be a red herring . The aircraft in the photo is clearly powered by two seperate engines. Rather than one located in the fuselage. I don't know what type they are though. But clearly different from those used on the Type S . Regards, Clint |
Re: Photo Morane Saulnier
Clint
I pass the engine test.... :) The photos I have seen of the Type S, it seems to have the same engines as this one. The book I refer to is Henri Lacaze and his Morane book published by Lela Presse Cheers Stig |
Re: Photo Morane Saulnier
Hi Stig,
I suppose I could be looking at the same engine and thinking I'm seeing two different engines. The radiators on MS.625 appear completely vertical whereas on the machine I've posted the radiators look diagonal. But I'm thinking that this might be due to the location of the photographer. What is certain is that this machine does resemble the Type S and doesn't resemble the line drawing of the Type X in Lacaze (which I have read!) at all. Two uses of the designation type X,one built and the other remaining on paper? Not the only reuse of a type designation by Morane Saulnier. But if it is as Type X as indicated by the photo one is left wondering how it differs from a Type S. Regards, Clint Regards, Clint |

Hello,
Currently on delcampe is a photo of Morane Type L flown by Bernis and Jacottet of MS.12 at: https://www.delcampe.net/en_GB/colle...179355111.html Behind their machine is Albatros B.I B.233/13 of FFA 5 which they had brought down. Hello,
Currently on delcampe are two photos of a Morane Saulnier Type N flown by Jean Casale of N 23. Has anyone the number of this machine? https://www.delcampe.net/fr/collecti...986017776.html https://www.delcampe.net/fr/collecti...986017239.html Regards, Clint |
Re: Photo Morane Saulnier
Hi Clint
To me the aircraft looks much more like a Morane-Saulnier Type AC. From where do you get the unit as Esc N.23? Nothing on Casale I'm afraid Cheers Stig |
Re: Photo Morane Saulnier
Hi Stig,
You're correct. It is a Type AC. Not to self, don't rush posts just because dinner is almost ready:o As for the escadrille being N 23, the date on the back of the first photo May 1917 covers the period which this site has him with N 23. https://www.as14-18.net/Casale Regards, Clint |
Re: Photo Morane Saulnier
Aha
Thanks Clint (Hope the dinner was worth it.... :D ) Cheers Stig |

Re: Photo Morane Saulnier
Nice Clint!
What do you make of the rather well demolished one with something like B122 visible on its remaining fin? Cheers Stig |
Re: Photo Morane Saulnier
Hi Stig,
Well B.122 could credibly be eithe r/14 or /15. Even /13 can't be definitively rejected, though it looks like B.122/13 more likely an Aviatik. You'll already have identified it as a Albatros B.I or B.II, but I'd really like a less crumpled wing before opting for either. I don't think the placing of the serial near the top of the rudder is going to help much in identifying the year, but shall have a look at other Albatros images and see if it helps. Not confident though for various reasons. I Hope the seller has more FFA 22 images to come, perhaps with a better view of this Albatros. Regards, Clint |
Re: Photo Morane Saulnier
Thanks Clint for the links (this one and elsewhere.....)

If you haven't already noticed, use the negative and make into positive. Works also for all his others Cheers Stig |
