Re: Photo Spad
Hello,
Currently on ebay is a photo of an Italian Spad S.XIII S.29** at: https://www.ebay.it/itm/Foto-aeronau...EAAOSwEW9f-zLs Strangely it has the number No.200 at the base of the rudder which wouldn't appear to be from the normal Italian serial range. Regards, Clint |
Re: Photo Spad
Hi Clint. Looks like the engine HP (H/S).
Nick |
Re: Photo Spad
Hi Nick,
Thanks, that makes sense. I should have thought of that with '200' even though I couldn't read the Hp. One more mistake to avoid in future! Regards, Clint |
Re: Photo Spad
Hello,
Currently on ebay is a photo of two Spad S.XIII of SPA.48 at: https://www.ebay.com/itm/avion-bipla...8AAOSwqrlgDSF9 Regards, Clint |
Re: Photo Spad
Hi Clint. Look like S.VIIs; but no "half-moon" round the insignia. They seem to have had SPADs and N.XVIIs at the same time .
Regards Nick |
Re: Photo Spad
Hi Nick,
Very possibly you are correct. I find it quite different to differentiate between the two types. Anyway since posting the above I've come across another photo of, lets call it a Spad, this time of SPA 37 at: https://www.ebay.fr/itm/AVION-SPAD-V...IAAOSwxe5gDI4x Regards, Clint |
Re: Photo Spad
Hi Clint.
Read SPA 150 not 37. Bertrand |
Re: Photo Spad
Hi Bertrand,
Thanks.Wrong Bird. I think I need to take a break from Spads. Regards, Clint |
Re: Photo Spad
Clint. Main difference is the rounded rudder on the XIII.
Nick |
Re: Photo Spad
Hi Nick,
Indeed, and straight cabane struts on the S.VII. I look forward with trepidation to posting my next Spad S.VII/S.XIII.Hopefully with a correct id. Regards, Clint |

Hello,
Currently on ebay is a photo of a Spad S.XI of SPAbi 2 S.65*9 at: https://www.delcampe.net/fr/collecti...380521309.html Can anyone read the third numeral of the serial at all? Regards, Clint |
Re: Photo Spad
Possibly 6379 with unit in 1918 ?? We've said before about French "3" and "5" !
Nick |
Re: Photo Spad
Hi Nick,
Very much taking on board your comments about the problem with numerals 3 & 5 I believe you may well be correct with 6379. Having said that I do have some Spad S.XI serials in the 65** range as well as 63**. Regards, Clint |
Re: Photo Spad

Re: Photo Spad
Hello,
Currently on ebay there is a photo of a crashed Spad of, I believe, SPA.98 at: https://www.ebay.de/itm/185218835487...EAAOSw2OJhvOym As far as I'm aware all the usual areas allowing a differention of the type of Spad shown are not visible in this photo.I cant tell whether its a Spad S.VII or Spad S.XIII.Can anyone identify the type of aircraft shown? Regards, Clint |
Re: Photo Spad
Clint
Not much help here I'm afraid, but if you look at the flip side of the photo there is a date listed, 7.6.1917 The text is extremely fuzzy so not even tried to understand what it says. No idea, of course, who wrote the date, ie if it is contemporary or done by some collector afterwards. But if the date is correct SPA 98 is wrong since that unit was not created, as N 98, until 1 Jan 1918. Cheers Stig |
Re: Photo Spad
Hi Stig,
Thanks for the response. It looks like its back to the start on this one. I didn't look at the rear of the photo, but as you say the date is too early for SPA.98.Unfortunately,checking traditions-air.fr it is the only unit I've seen with the diagonal fuselage band with a darker coloured central strip. Hopefully one of the board's french readers can assist both with the unit id and the type of Spad shown. Regards, Clint |
Re: Photo Spad
Yep Clint
I agree, I cannot find any other unit using such bands/stripes. Tricky one.... :) Cheers Stig |
Re: Photo Spad
Stig-Clint this is SPAD VII B1524 23 Sqn. (assigned to Cochran-Patrick ) shot down by Paul Aue ( Jasta 10) 7 June 1917 near Menin. The POW pilot was 2/Lt. F W Illingworth on an offensive patrol. It also had a red-white striped cowling front. 23 had various fuselage markings.
Regards Nick |
Re: Photo Spad
Hi Nick,
Thanks. I should have believed the seller when he said Englisches Flugzeug. The markings just 'looked' french. Regards, Clint |
Re: Photo Spad
Thanks Nick
Cheers Stig |
Re: Photo Spad
Hello,
Currently on ebay is a Spad S.VII captioned as being flown by Belgian ace Edmond Thieffrey. https://www.ebay.de/itm/375136348448...EAAOSwQwhlhMIp There are also two photos of Thieffrey as a captive of FA (A) 227. https://www.ebay.de/itm/375136350783...4AAOSwuIRlhMSN https://www.ebay.de/itm/375136350783...4AAOSwuIRlhMSN Regards, Clint |
Re: Photo Spad
Rather odd to see Thieffry more or less unwounded in these photos
According to Walter Pieters he was treated in three different hospitals after being shot down  Cheers Stig |
Re: Photo Spad
Hello,
Currently on ebay are a series of photos of Spad S.XVI of SPAbi 53 https://www.ebay.com/itm/28575624688...Bk9SR5732PfEYw The photos of the machine standing on its nose have been seen before and are stated to be S.9484 by Albin Denis. http://albindenis.free.fr/Site_escad...adrille053.htm Perhaps the photos of the aircraft with 'Julot' on its tail are the same machine at a different stage in its career, perhaps a different machine. Hopefully at least some of these photos have not been previously seen as the seller has other photos of WW.I aircraft which are somewhat familiar https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_dkr...+photo&_sop=10 Regards, Clint |
Re: Photo Spad
Hello,
Currently on ebay is a photo of the crashed Spad of Alan Nutt of the 94th Aero Squadron.Hopefully this is not already well known. Was this S.4505? https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/166700455...Bk9SR6rR7cjZYw Regards, Clint |
Re: Photo Spad
It was S4505 and Nutt was shot down by Buchner Jasta 13 one of his 4 claims (date was actually the 26th) buried in Meuse-Argonne Cemetery; he was awarded the DSC and there's quite a lot about him on the net.
There were around 70 Allied losses this day, one of the costliest. Nick |
Re: Photo Spad

Hello,
The seller of items in the previous post in this thread has added further stereo glass negative images of French Aircraft including Spad S.3585 of SPA 112 https://www.ebay.fr/itm/405243934151...Bk9SR8yK05XDZA The other items including many photos of Spads ,but once again including a captured Fokker D.VII can be found at https://www.ebay.fr/sch/i.html?_dkr=...+verre&_sop=10 Regards, Clint |
Re: Photo Spad
Clint
The SPAD you refer to is S3596 There is a much better stereo negative showing the serial number very clearly Not sure if they were from this sale or a previous one, ain't gone through them again this time Cheers Stig |
Re: Photo Spad
Thanks Stig. Damn eyesight. Same plane, same occasion, but from a different angle. I suspect the sellers Fokker D.VII photos are all of the same machine too, though I don't think the serial was visible on any other photo.I believe that all photos with today's date are new. I can't 100 percent swear that the aircraft in question hasn't been seen before, but I've only really taken a interesr in those with serials.
Regards, Clint |

Hello,
Currently on delcampe are acouple of nice photos of Spad S.XVI Spad S.XVI S.9615 of SPABi 20 https://www.delcampe.net/en_GB/colle...129648358.html Spad S.XVI Unit unknown https://www.delcampe.net/en_GB/colle...129648355.html Regards, Clint |
Re: Photo Spad
Hello,
Following further research I think it is quite probable that the second S.XVI photo in the thread prior to this one is probably a machine of SPABi 60. Regards, Clint |
