Re: Photo Nieuport

Hi Stig,

I personally wouldn't be able to say what type of Nieuport is shown. I'm going on the sellers description - nothing more.

Clint

Re: Photo Nieuport

Stig,

What I have done is some internet searches. Usually if I have time I'll do an image search to try and avoid posting photos that have already been seen. Now,there is a guy that goes by the same moniker as the seller of this item ,Photowar that has recently posted some photos of Russian aircraft on the Aerodrome forum. Given that he was prepared to ask a question on whether certain photos were Voisin LA or LAS,I would like to think - and it seems reasonable to do so, that he isn't afraid to admit when he can't identify an aircraft and wouldn't caption the Nieuport as 24 bis if he didn't believe/know it was such.Still it will be interesting to have Nick's take on the photo.

Regards,

Clint

Re: Photo Nieuport

Indeed Clint

According to Nick the main visible difference was the head rest so even with the bearded guy taking a step back,
no s/n visible, I would have said a 16 too!
Can't see any difference between the 80 and 110hp engines.

Very nice photo BTW

Re: Photo Nieuport

The 17bis and 24bis were very similar but the 17bis had a narrow-chord cowling and the 24bis had rounded wing-tips (as seen here); the mid-war Nieuports are the problem.
17bis..round fuselage, square tail, headrest.
21...flat fuselage, square tail, no headrest ( trainers).
23...flat fuselage, square tail, headrest (mostly trainers).
23bis.. (very few) round fuselage, square tail, headrest (RFC).
24.. round fuselage, round tail, headrest, sprung tailskid.
24bis..round fuselage, square tail, headrest, rounded wingtips.

27..round fuselage, round tail, headrest, rounded wingtips.
Engines varied but 21s usually had horseshoe cowlings like 11 / 16s. 17bis had narrow cowling.
Most Russian Nieuports seem to be 11/17/21/24/24bis.

Re: Photo Nieuport

Thanks Nick

It's a start I guess, even if I have a hard time to actually see any of these differences.
With rounded wing tips I assume you mean the ailerons on the Nieuport 24bis were more rounded?

Since you single out the 17bis having a "narrow chord" cowling, can you develop that a bit please?
I looked at so called identified 17bis vs 24bis photos and I can't see any difference in their cowlings....

Re: Photo Nieuport

Stig. this is a 17bis with narrow cowling and an RFC 24bis with standard. You can only see the difference from the side.
Both the 80 and 110 LR engines had 9 cylinders, main difference I think was that the 110 made the machine nose-heavy.
The Russian Nieuport in Clint's photo is a 24bis with rounded ailerons (I called it wing tips). Also the seller is based in Russia (note the "5" and "3" again).

Thanks Nick

Get the point. There is a lot to go through with the look-a-likes before one can be certain.
Guess I prefer a solid serial number any day of the week.... :)
