Re: Photo Bristol Aircraft

Quite rare I think

Not seen many BR.7s
Another interesting post card is this one
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Monoplane...75.c100623.m-1
I have never seen any photo before of the crash
It is also interesting to see how quickly a photo could be turned into a post card. Since the accident is usually quoted as happening on the 18th (not 17/7) and the postcard seems to be dated 5th of August, it leaves us with 18 days in between.
Does the signature on the back says Gordon? Could it possibly be Gordon England?? No idea, but whoever it was, a bit odd post card to send to what could be interpreted as his sweetheart?

What type of aircraft I hear you wonder?
Ah yes, the Bristol-Prier two-seater c/n 108.

Re: Photo Bristol Aircraft

Hi Stig it IS 72 Sqn in Mesopotamia some time after March 1918 with "C" Flight; the right-hand one in the line-up has a white 5-zig-zag personal marking seen in another shot. At least 2 had no fuselage cocardes ( I think the Fight had 8 M1s).

Re: Photo Bristol Aircraft

Just remembered; the Shuttleworth Collection ( I live near there) has a replica M1c in these markings flying as C4918 ( G-BWJM) with an original 110 Le Rhone.
Can't vouch for the serial though but that was an M1c.

Re: Photo Bristol Aircraft

Hi Nick

Yes, 72 Squadron operated 13 M.1C in all, probably all with C-flight.
The first two, C4914 and C4915, are known to have been assigned already in Jan 1918 to the unit. Exactly how many there were when the unit was officially resurrected in Basra on 2 March 1918, is not listed in my sources.

There is a nice book published by Cross & Cockade called 'Wings over Mesopotamia' which I found very good covering the period 1914-1919.

Pity the photo is not better. I liked the Bristol Bullet.

Cheers

Re: Photo Bristol Aircraft

No this is 39 Sq.
It was so assigned and the diamond marking also fits other photos of that unit.

Cheers
