Re: JG 54
I wonder if there is anyone who has information or list of pilots from IV/JG54 between 1943 and 1945?

Re: JG 54
Finally found something about him - He died 2013 and at the bottom of this link there is registered that he served in JG54 and JG7 from 1943-1945. Would be nice to get more information and/or photo's related to him. Here is the link: http://www.lszrn.de/index.php/discla...mittverstorben

Re: JG 54
Dieter Schmitt was a pilot in 13. Staffel JG 54. He was shot down south of Cologne on 18.12.1944 with a Fw 190A-8. Would like to know more also.

Re: JG 54
In the JG7 book by Manfred Boehme under list of JG7 pilots it just shows Schmidt,Dieter Uffz. born 1924, previous unit JG 54, number of missions 4, victories none. Perhaps he had not been with JG 54 long before being wounded on 18th.Dec.1944 and on his recovery posted to JG7 ? Looking at the number of missions, in the tables, this appears to be the total flown in all units. Erich Rudorfler for example has around 950 missions against his name.

Ok, thank you good information.

Re: JG 54
Do you have his book Nordpolflug? Does he describe his time with JG 54 in any detail? He was wounded on 18.12.1944 and when he came back IV./JG 54 had become II./JG 7.

Re: JG 54
I have the book - Nordpolflug -, with his handwritten note to me in it and signature. It was a personal gift from him to me. I also keep a letter in the book that he left for me in the year 2000, probably his last or near last travel across the N-Atlantic). I have not read the book in detail as it is in German and my German is limited. I will check if there is a section about his Luftwaffe years in it, but I think not. He had told me that at the end of the war he was receiving training on M262 so this can fit.
At the back of the book cover (inside folded panel) it says: "Der Autor: Dietrich, Wolfgang, Conrad, Wilhelm, (gennant Dieter) Schmitt, geb. am 1.6.1924 in Heidelberg." Then there is a list with years and events and where it comes to 1942 it says: "... Marz 1942 Luftwaffe, 1943 Ausbildung Flugzeugfuhrer, 1944 Jagdflieger, JG 54, 2mal abgeschossen und verwundedt. Studium 1 semester Flugzeugbau. 1945 Gefangenschaft, Entlassung, Kriegsinvalide (Wirbelsaulenbruch, Flugsauguberschlag). ..." |
Re: JG 54
I have recently learned that Dieter Schmitt died 3 or 4 years ago. I also learned that he joined JG7 afther he left JG54 (probably early 1945?). I knew he had ME 262 training, he told me so once and this news explains that.
