In fact, this story is told in Steinhoff book, and is supposed to have been told by S Freytag himself. I don't know if the authors had another source.
I understood that JL Roba wrote an article in the french Forign Legion bulletin, telling this story...
Mr Prien seems to have the most comprehensive data about those events, and he himself says that nothing is known for sure......

Re: Siegfried Freytag's 1./JG-77- Shot down over Malta

On 15 October, 1942, Gerhard Michalski, gruppen kdr of II/JG 53 was shot down by a spitfire (sqdn 126, F/Lt Jones and F/Sgt Varey?) off Marsaxxlokk Bay, a small harbour south of Malta. He baled out of his BF 109 G-2, landing in the sea. He was rescued by a Do 24.

A very similar story to Freytag's.

I wonder if other pilots bailed out close to Malta and were rescued by german Do 24. At least, the two top scorers above Malta had the same story to tell.

I also wonder if one of the was called "the lion of Mlta" or something like that...?
