I think that Chris’s original one-volume Second Tactical Air Force and the three-part Pictorial History of the Mediterranean Air War had a lot to do with my getting into research. It was a long time later that I met him and I can only second the tributes to what a nice bloke he was.

His work room (probably with more floor space than my house) seemed to have every Luftwaffe book ever published on its shelves. You could happily have spent a week there.

He also showed me how he developed and managed his projects via carefully organised and maintained notebooks — as in actual writing on paper. It obviously worked!

I'm saddened to hear this; RIP Chris. Back in 2008, I wrote about 'the passing beyond the veil' of the older generation of historians AND the first hand witnesses to the conflict and what the future of WW2 writing would hold.
