Re: Which stories behind these photos?
Hi,
Another and different photo of this Blenheim R3662 has been previously published by ebay. The caption of this WV-T given Dunkerque. A/C was belly-landed on the beach. P9317 is certainly the serial of the SD-A. Topic here : http://forum.12oclockhigh.net/showthread.php?t=18668 HTH Bertrand |

Correct, it is P9317 of the 222 Sqn. I attach another picture with s/n. It should be the same machine in fornt of what F/L Bader was photographed in May 1940. See Darkar´s BoB. Michal |

Re: Which stories behind these photos?
Concerning BB236, four of the crew were killed: Sgt EH Tytherleigh, F/O JH Carrick RCAF, F/O GM Gillies RCAF, and Sgt NR Jones RAAF.
Sgt EW Parr (pilot), Sgt GE Swift and Sgt J Cunningham were taken POW and from the photos it seems the pilot had a lucky escape as those other poor men shown in the wreckage were probably those grouped in the forward fuselage - ie Flight Engineer, Observer, Bomber Aimer, Wireless Op. |

Hi All,
Currently on e bay, a wellington, I can't make out if the a/c has an ASV ( or remains of ) aerial under the port wing. Anyone with more knowledge or better eyesight... Cheers Jerry http://cgi.ebay.ca/Foto-Engl-Bomber-...item439ee72ff5 only a small photo attached, a larger one is viewable via the e bay auction. |
Re: Which stories behind these photos?
I have looked at the enlarged version and I do not think this Wellington has ASV especially as aircraft that carried the early 1.5 metre wavelength ASV had four mast aerials on the top of the rear fuselage. There is no trace of these.
It is in typical Bomber Command colours of 1941 and although Mk 1C were converted to GR Mk VIII equipped with ASV in the Middle East I think this is a standard bomber version. I think the photo has been taken in the desert of a Wellington abandoned on an airstrip that's been captured by the Axis and that the bits hanging down are damage. |

Re: Which stories behind these photos?
Hampdens that the Germans got hold of were P2070 VN-X of 50 Sqn, L4146 QR-P and P4324 also QR-P both of 61 Sqn, AE265 of 144 Sqn PL-? and AT109 UB-C of 455 Sqn.
So the latest photo of Hampden 'P' could be one of those from 61 Sqn and as P4324 landed in Vlieland off the Dutch coast and we have seen photos of it I reckon this new photo is L4146 that force landed in Germany out of fuel on 24th May 1940. Incidentally the roundal looks typically 1940 and the green and brown camo is still painted on the fuselage sides (fuselage sides were painted black from late 1940 onwards) The D/F loop is of the early retractable type before the fixed streamlined versions were fitted, all of which indicate early war period |

Hi Interesting I didn't know 112 Sqn had blenheims, or used code 'YH' cheers Jerry |
Re: Which stories behind these photos?
Just to end the confusion YH was used on 21 Sqn Lockheed Venturas in NW Europe and by 11 Sqn in the Middle East on Blenheims.
The photo of the Blenheim on this thread is virtually the same setting as the YH-L coded Blenheim said to be abandoned in Crete - as seen on Page 32 of 'In Enemy Hands' by Bryan Philpott by PSL 1981. Even the way the aircraft individual code has been placed on YH-D is the same as YH-L. 112 Sqn was a Fighter Sqn flying the Tomahawks and Kittyhawks for much of WW2. |

Blenheim IV WV-S/L8875 landed on 30/4/1940 at Brussels-Evere. The crew members : Sgt Thomas (pilot), Sgt Talbot (observer) and LAC Smith (gunner). They were lost and seeing Battle on the airfield, they thought they were in France and landed on Evere airfield. They were interned.

Hurricane P2537 belonged to 79 Sqn and is recorded as 'lost in France' May 1940.
Its hard to tell whether its been stripped of bits to repair other Hurricance of suffered damage by ground crew to stop it being used by the Germans. |

Re: Which stories behind these photos?

I didn´t note it but now I see it. Strange because the identification of s/n from this new, and my source gives BE684. With other indicia like roundel, field shape it frames the period for summer. Last loss for the 174 Sqn before 30/7 was Sgt Mort already on 2/6 during Circus to Foret d´Eu. Regards, Michal |
