Re: eBay: Allied intrest

Post # 3196 (KAKI). A memorial presumably to the RAF airmen killed in the bombers listed ( Wellington / Blenheim/ Whitley ?/ Hampden ), not unusual this early in the war; the inscription reads (as I see it)... " In his mind he counts his loved ones because these are the ones missing".

Re: eBay: Allied intrest

This is an odd collection (photo 1), the 368BS was with the 306BG Eighth AF; B-17F 42-30667 ("Wild children") was 390BG also Eighth AF, lost 11-12-43 on the Emden mission.
"Frank Buck" ( B-17E 41-2659) is interesting, 19BG then 43BG Fifth AF; she force-landed on the beach at Hood Point PNG Sept.15 1942 after a Rabaul raid and some PSP matting was delivered by boat to help her take-off to P. Moresby. The markings above the name are 5 Rising sun flags. Her nickname was "Bring 'em back alive", Buck was a famous game hunter.

There is an account of the 42-30667 event in the Netherlands here:

Re: eBay: Allied intrest

Thank you Nick. The big game hunter was something I encountered in a few Hollywood movies where the well-armed man was photographed with one foot on his kill.

Best,
Ed

Re: eBay: Allied intrest

Photos 4-5, the much-photographed B-17F 42-3040 OR-Q (91BG) "Miss Ouachita" shot down by Maj. Heinz Baer 6./JG1 on 21 Feb. 1944 (some sources say 22nd. but MACR 2457 has 21st.); she was strafed by US fighters on the ground. This was Mission 228 but the 1st. Division had no PFF aircraft so bombed targets of opportunity.
