Re: eBay: German intrest

Hi Larry, see the resemblance on this tower protecting a railroad. A little bit different one in mg34 but basic design looks the same. Wich make sence because the firing of the Flak gun would cause quite some stress on the woodwork construction.

I have read that Germans also uses tactics in combatting the attacking planes post d-day by using the mobile units in ever changing places around these towers and other dug in positions. These could really spoil a low flying attackers day.

Re: eBay: German intrest

Snautzer - thanks for the additional information in your Post #321, above. The comment about the photo interpreters not being able to tell dummy and unoccupied Flak positions from those that were occupied and active is too true. Most of the Luftwaffe aerial photos for the Eastern Front airfields were taken from 7,500 - 8,000 meters and while all or most of the Flak positions are shown, the annotations made on the print by the interpreters never provide information stating which were occupied and which unoccupied. Flak towers were a rarity in the East, too, but rooftops on the airfields were definitely used.

For every measure initiated by the Allies, the Germans came up with a countermeasure and vice versa.

Thanks again,

L.

Re: eBay: German intrest

I have seen photos of light flak guns on rooftops on structurally suitable buildings, on flatbed trucks and on rail cars. One interesting innovation was a large concrete cylinder on a flatbed rail car with a raised wooden floor that had additional ammo stored under it.

Note: There was a post here some years ago that started with the premise of the "myth" of wooden flak towers.

What suprised me the German let even locomotives run by itself to attract allied flyers. As an ambush. I can make above document available to you.

Re: eBay: German intrest

At least a few flak positions appear to have been established quickly and without the usual wall or other barrier or below ground level.

Thanks for your kind offer, Snautzer, and I will let you know if I ever need them to examine this subject in more depth.

Cheers,
