Re: eBay: Allied intrest
Ed,
Another year passed, and what a difficult one. Many thanks Ed for your time and work in finding all those interesting and valuable photos, many of which yield new information. I especially appreciate the 1940 images, but all are interesting. Best wishes for a better 2021 ! Regards, Martin Gleeson. |
Re: eBay: Allied intrest
Martin,
Thank you for your kind words. Now that three vaccines are available in the West, I look forward to better days. Best Wishes to you and yours for a better, healthier New Year. Regards, Ed West |

Hi all,

Thanks Ed for these links
# 7 : Wellington of n°419 (Moose) Sqn RCAF X3359, VR-N on 17 june 1942 More here : https://aviation-safety.net/wikibase/wiki.php?id=204609 Bertrand |
Re: eBay: Allied intrest
And thanks also from me Ed for collating these useful images.
# 2 has me stumped. If it is indeed 1940 and France, there don't appear to be any candidates. The only three aircraft lost over Europe were: L9451 13 Sep 40 - this was WR-V (Norway) L9453 20 Oct 40 - this was WR-Z (Norway) L9457 19 Aug 40 - this was WR-S (Norway) Maybe it is L946_, which introduces many more candidates. |
Re: eBay: Allied intrest
You're welcome Bertrand and AndyMa. As far as photos being described accurately, it appears that most of the time, the seller has good information, other times, apparently not. Unless something is written on the back of the photo to provide some confirmation, but I have seen one or two posts here stating that the writing on the back of a particular photo was added later and not authentic.

Re: eBay: Allied intrest
Hello all,
This photo (#2, 7-1-2021) appears on page 232 of 'THE BATTLE OF FRANCE, THEN AND NOW' by Peter Cornwell. He identifies it as L9459 of 53 Squadron, lost on 11 May 1940 when it was forced-landed near Borlez in Belgium. The aircraft letter appears to me to be 'G', not 'C', but it is difficult to tell which. I don't believe it is a 248 Squadron loss in Norway, partly because of the background. Also based on Ross McNeill's 'RAF COASTAL COMMAND LOSSES, 1939-1941' all three mentioned by Andy appear to have crashed in the sea. Regards, Martin Gleeson. |

Thanks. I don't know why I failed to consider L9459 - doh! As you say the code does look a little ambiguous. Are there any 53 Sqn code font experts out there?! Andy |
Re: eBay: Allied intrest
Could someone identify this Hurricane ? - I don't think that description of that auction is correct "This burning Hurricane was part of a Boston bomber escort, and was shot down when an ME 109 dived on to it from above. The pilot baled out and made a safe landing.
DATE - 27.7.1942 " Maybe it is Hurricane BP120 of 33 Sqn shot downed 24.07.1942 nr El Alamein ? https://www.ebay.com/itm/Original-Press-Photo-... |

Perhaps you never scrolled down to see his statement? It is of course impossible to see for us, so we have to trust him..... Cheers Stig |
Re: eBay: Allied intrest
Hi Stig,
you have better eyes then I :-)I didn't register the notes at all......but: Spitfire MA653 - was in Afrika/MTO - so Italy is very likely Spitfire MB777 - same like previous Spitfire PA893 - served just shortly in N Europe and it is strange plane for me: https://allspitfirepilots.org/aircraft/PA893 https://aviation-safety.net/wikibase/50011 https://hewasahero.wordpress.com/201...serial-number/ Most of them are photo machines, but my question is about griffon engine Spit in Italy - which unit or which machine is it,because until recently, I thought they were only used in N Europe..... Faenor |
Re: eBay: Allied intrest
No, not better eyes Faenor :)
I was quite surprised myself that the seller actually had tried to investigate his product. Very rare, so quite understandable you missed it! Checking the aircraft given, yes indeed PA893 seems to be a faulty reading. When it comes to recce aircraft there is always the possibility of some long range flights, but in this case I also doubt it, so that number is "dodgy" :) Can't help you with the Griffon version. Takes too long to go through all RAF units and/or Griffon engined aircraft. I don't have Spitfire versions vs units. Cheers Stig |
Re: eBay: Allied intrest
One thing that always strikes me is "who is collecting this information?".
We can see from the picture that MA653 was coded C at one point. Was that previously known? If not, how does it get into the hands of the serious Spitfire researchers? |
Re: eBay: Allied intrest
......based on the info from my friend, this Griffon engined Spitfire is PR XIX from 681,682 or 683. Sq.
